Hawks Return Experienced Core Entering Second Season Under McCulla

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's golf team enters the 2026-27 season with eight returners, one transfer and two local freshmen as the Hawks begin their second year under head coach Alex McCulla.

Quincy returns several of its most consistent golfers from a season ago, including David Gartrell, Blake Arnold and Colby Robertson, while adding three newcomers to the roster.

Gartrell Leads Returning Group

Sophomore David Gartrell returns after putting together an impressive freshman campaign and leading the Hawks in scoring average.

Gartrell competed in nine tournaments and totaled 21.5 rounds during his first collegiate season, finishing with 1,621 strokes and a team-best 75.4 scoring average.

His top performance came at the Las Vegas Warrior Invitational, where he fired rounds of 69, 72 and 73 to finish at two-under par with a 214 and place third overall.

The performance earned Gartrell the first GLVC Player of the Week honor in Quincy men's golf history.

Gartrell led the Hawks in two tournaments during his freshman campaign and enters year two looking to build on a strong start to his collegiate career.

Senior Blake Arnold also returns after becoming one of Quincy's most consistent players during his first season with the program.

Arnold competed in nine of the Hawks' 10 tournaments and totaled 20.5 rounds. He finished the season with 1,561 strokes and a 76.1 scoring average while leading Quincy in four tournaments, the most of any player on the roster.

His low round of the season came at the Midwest Collegiate, where he carded a 68.

Junior Colby Robertson gives the Hawks another returning player with significant tournament experience.

Robertson competed in seven tournaments during his first season with Quincy, totaling 15.5 rounds and 1,184 strokes. He finished the year with a 76.4 scoring average, giving the Hawks three returners who averaged below 77 strokes per round last season.

Returning Depth

Sophomore Colton Barr returns after competing in three tournaments during his freshman campaign. Barr played nine rounds and finished the year with a scoring average of 80.2.

Junior Konnor Craven appeared in two tournaments during his first season with the Hawks, totaling five rounds and posting a 79.6 scoring average.

Senior Michael Martelli also competed in two tournaments last season, playing five rounds and averaging 82.0 strokes per round.

Junior Matthew Boudreau appeared in two tournaments and totaled five rounds, finishing the season with an 85.0 scoring average.

Junior Ross Gawends rounds out the returning group after not seeing tournament action during the 2025-26 season.

With eight players returning, McCulla enters his second season with a roster that brings back experience from throughout last year's lineup.

Smith Adds Collegiate Experience

The Hawks added one transfer to the roster in junior Logan Smith.

Smith began his collegiate career at Kansas Wesleyan before spending his sophomore season at Illinois Central College.

During his year at ICC, Smith posted a 77.72 scoring average per round and adds another experienced collegiate golfer to Quincy's lineup.

Local Freshmen Join Hawks

Quincy's newcomer class also includes two freshmen with strong ties to the area.

Kyle Locke joins the Hawks from nearby Hannibal High School in Hannibal, Missouri, while Hunter St. Clair stays home after graduating from Quincy Senior High School.

Both freshmen will have an opportunity to compete for tournament spots as they begin their collegiate careers under McCulla.

With eight returners and three newcomers, the Hawks enter the season with a combination of established production at the top of the lineup and added competition throughout the roster.

Gartrell, Arnold and Robertson give Quincy three returning golfers who averaged fewer than 77 strokes per round last season, while Smith adds another player with previous collegiate experience.

The 2026-27 season is already underway as the Hawks opened play at the Arch Cup at Gateway National Golf Links in Madison, Illinois.
