Hawks Prepare for Road Showdown With No. 15 Lincoln

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team continues its final road stretch of the regular season on Sunday, October 18, traveling to Jefferson City, Missouri, for a matchup against undefeated No. 15 Lincoln University. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 PM at Capital City High School.

Quincy enters the contest at 6-2-7 overall and 5-1-6 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play after battling Upper Iowa to a 2-2 draw Wednesday.

Lincoln remains unbeaten at 8-0-4 overall and 7-0-3 in conference action following a 1-0 victory over Maryville.

With only two regular-season matches remaining, the Hawks sit fourth in the GLVC standings with 21 points and remain firmly in the race for a top-four seed and the right to host an opening-round conference tournament match.

Last Time Out

Quincy generated consistent offensive pressure but settled for a 2-2 draw against Upper Iowa on Wednesday at Legends Stadium.

The Hawks finished with a 32-11 advantage in shots, a 9-5 edge in shots on goal and a 15-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Despite the early pressure, Upper Iowa struck first in the 27th minute.

Quincy entered halftime trailing 1-0 despite outshooting the Peacocks 10-4 and earning nine corner kicks during the opening 45 minutes.

The Hawks responded in the second half behind Leo Cann.

Cann converted a penalty kick in the 55th minute to even the match before finding the back of the net again at 78:02 to give Quincy its first lead. The brace marked Cann's third multi-goal performance of the season and pushed his season total to 10 goals.

The advantage lasted only 10 seconds.

Upper Iowa answered at 78:12 to immediately bring the match level at 2-2.

The physicality increased down the stretch, with the Peacocks receiving a red card in the 86th minute and finishing the match with 10 players.

Quincy nearly capitalized moments later when Carter Venvertloh forced a save before striking the left post at 86:12.

Cann finished with 10 shots, including five on goal, while Rylan Fischer added seven attempts. Goalkeeper Jake Offerman played all 90 minutes and made three saves.

Cann Continues to Lead Quincy Attack

Cann enters Sunday's matchup as the centerpiece of a Quincy attack that has scored 23 goals through 15 matches.

The junior leads the Hawks with 10 goals and three assists after his two-goal performance against Upper Iowa.

Josh Nwosu follows with five goals and two assists, giving Quincy another proven attacking option as the Hawks prepare to face one of the GLVC's strongest defensive teams.

Quincy's ability to create opportunities has been evident throughout the season, including Wednesday's 32-shot performance.

Turning those chances into goals will become especially important against a Lincoln side that has allowed only nine goals all season.

Two Strong Defenses Meet

Sunday features two teams that have combined offensive production with strong defensive play.

Quincy has allowed just 12 goals through 15 matches and has recorded six shutouts. Offerman has made 34 saves in 13 appearances while posting a .791 save percentage. The Hawks have yet to allow more than two goals in a match this season.

Lincoln has been even more difficult to break down.

The Blue Tigers have surrendered only nine goals through 12 matches while recording six shutouts.

Goalkeeping duties have been shared between Felipe Mattos and Vincent Osei. Mattos has made 18 saves while recording four shutouts, while Osei has added 19 saves and two clean sheets.

With both teams also sitting at 23 goals scored, Sunday's matchup brings together two sides with similar profiles on both ends of the field.

Scouting No. 15 Lincoln

Lincoln enters Sunday as one of the remaining unbeaten teams in Division II at 8-0-4 overall and 7-0-3 in GLVC play.

The Blue Tigers are coming off a 1-0 victory over Maryville.

After a scoreless opening half, Jonathan Nemorden scored the eventual game-winner in the 68th minute.

Nemorden leads Lincoln with nine goals and two assists.

Jerome Lawel has added three goals and five assists, while Makwe Nkoana has contributed four goals and one assist.

Lawel recently earned GLVC Offensive Player of the Week honors after scoring twice in a 2-1 victory over UMSL and adding an assist in a 1-1 draw against Indianapolis.

Lincoln averages approximately 14.7 shots per match and has been held scoreless only once this season.

The Blue Tigers have received several conference honors throughout the year, with Nkoana, Osei and Mattos also earning GLVC weekly recognition.

Lincoln entered the season with high expectations after finishing 12-2-6 overall and 8-0-6 in GLVC play last year before advancing to the NCAA Division II Tournament Sweet 16. The Blue Tigers were selected No. 16 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll and were picked first in the GLVC preseason coaches poll.

Head coach Sammy Samuels is in his third season leading the program since Lincoln restored men's soccer in 2024.

Series History

Since Lincoln restored its program in 2024, the Blue Tigers hold a 1-0-1 advantage against Quincy.

The programs played to a 3-3 draw during Lincoln's first season before the Blue Tigers earned a 1-0 victory last year in Jefferson City.

The 2025 meeting remained scoreless through halftime. Nwosu came close to putting Quincy in front during the opening half when he struck the crossbar, but neither side was able to break through before the interval.

Lincoln scored the only goal of the contest in the 49th minute when Christopher Hull finished a chance created by Kevon Maitland.

The Blue Tigers held a 15-7 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in shots on goal.

Quincy continued to search for an equalizer through opportunities from Nwosu, Mathias Bringedal, Lewis Chapman, Ryan Myatt and Cann but could not find the tying goal.

Offerman made three saves, while the Quincy defense also recorded a team save in the 84th minute.

Lincoln struck the woodwork twice during the second half but was unable to extend the advantage.

Sunday gives Quincy another opportunity to earn its first victory against the Blue Tigers since the program's return.

GLVC Positioning on the Line

Sunday's matchup carries major implications near the top of the conference standings.

Drury currently leads the GLVC with 26 points, followed by Lincoln with 24 and Maryville with 23. Quincy sits fourth with 21 points, while Indianapolis and Missouri S&T are close behind with 19 apiece.

Drury and Lincoln have already secured places in the GLVC Tournament.

For Quincy, the final two matches are about both securing its own postseason position and remaining in the race for a top-four seed.

The top eight teams qualify for the conference tournament, with the top four hosting opening-round matches.

A result Sunday would give the Hawks valuable points against a team currently ahead of them in the table while strengthening their position against the teams immediately behind them.

Following the trip to Lincoln, Quincy closes the regular season on the road against Truman State.

Matchup Outlook

Sunday presents one of Quincy's toughest challenges of the regular season.

Lincoln has yet to lose, owns one of the conference's best defensive records and enters the match sitting second in the GLVC standings.

The Hawks, however, have also proven difficult to beat.

Quincy has lost just twice through 15 matches and enters Sunday with an attack that continues to create opportunities at a high rate.

Cann's emergence as a 10-goal scorer gives the Hawks a dangerous finisher, while Nwosu and the rest of the Quincy attack will look to test a Lincoln defense that has conceded fewer than one goal per match.

On the other end, limiting Nemorden and preventing Lincoln's other attacking options from creating opportunities around him will be critical for the Hawks.

With both teams sitting at 23 goals scored and both allowing fewer than one goal per match, Sunday's showdown could come down to which side is able to capitalize on a limited number of quality chances.

For Quincy, a result against the nationally ranked Blue Tigers would provide a significant boost in the GLVC standings with just one regular-season match remaining.

Kickoff between Quincy and No. 15 Lincoln is scheduled for 2:30 PM Sunday at Capital City High School in Jefferson City, Missouri.
