Hawks Look to Extend Winning Momentum Against Upper Iowa in Final Regular-Season Home Match

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team returns to Legends Stadium on Wednesday, October 14, to host Upper Iowa University in its final regular-season home match. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 PM.

Quincy enters the matchup with a 6-2-6 overall record and a 5-1-5 mark in Great Lakes Valley Conference play following a 2-0 Senior Day victory over Southwest Baptist on Saturday.

Upper Iowa comes to Quincy at 1-8-4 overall and 1-8-2 in conference action after suffering a 1-0 road loss to No. 11 Drury.

With just three regular-season matches remaining, the Hawks sit fourth in the GLVC standings and remain firmly in the race for a top-four seed and the right to host an opening-round conference tournament match.

Last Time Out

Quincy used a pair of second-half goals to secure a 2-0 Senior Day victory over Southwest Baptist on Saturday at Legends Stadium.

The Bearcats generated several early opportunities, including a ninth-minute chance from Thomas Ladetto Spuches that forced goalkeeper Jake Offerman into a save.

Southwest Baptist continued to challenge the Quincy defense throughout the opening half, but the Hawks held firm and sent the match into halftime scoreless.

Quincy broke through in the 70th minute.

Leo Cann found the back of the net at 69:01 off assists from Rylan Fischer and Lucca Barbero, giving the Hawks a 1-0 advantage. Cann continued to threaten late, striking the woodwork in both the 82nd and 86th minutes.

Quincy added its insurance goal at 85:43 when Mathias Bringedal finished a chance created by John Drew to extend the lead to 2-0.

The Hawks finished with a 22-14 advantage in shots, an 8-4 edge in shots on goal and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Offerman made four saves over 90 minutes to record his sixth shutout of the season. The senior goalkeeper also surpassed 100 career saves during the victory.

Hawks Remain in Top-Four Race

Wednesday begins the final three-match stretch of Quincy's regular season.

Drury and Maryville currently lead the GLVC with 23 points, while Lincoln follows with 21.

Quincy occupies fourth place with 20 points, one behind Lincoln and only three behind the conference leaders. Indianapolis sits directly behind the Hawks with 19 points, while Missouri S&T follows with 18.

The top eight teams qualify for the GLVC Tournament, with the top four seeds hosting the opening round.

A victory Wednesday would move Quincy to 23 points, strengthening its position in the hosting race and putting the Hawks level with the current point total of the conference leaders.

Following Wednesday's home finale, Quincy will close the regular season with road contests at Lincoln and Truman State.

Defense Continues to Lead the Way

Quincy's defensive consistency has been one of the defining strengths of its season.

The Hawks have allowed only 10 goals through 14 matches, an average of 0.71 per contest. Offerman has anchored the group with 31 saves and six shutouts.

His clean sheet against Southwest Baptist came in his return to the lineup after missing the Maryville match due to a one-game suspension.

Quincy has consistently limited opposing attacks throughout conference play and will look to continue that trend against an Upper Iowa side that has struggled to find the net recently.

The Peacocks enter Wednesday having been held scoreless in each of their last three matches.

Cann Leads Quincy Attack

Quincy has scored 21 goals this season, with Cann continuing to lead the offensive unit.

The junior has recorded eight goals and three assists, including the game-winning goal against Southwest Baptist. Josh Nwosu follows with five goals and two assists, while Bringedal has contributed four goals and two assists.

Bringedal's goal Saturday marked another important contribution from a Quincy attack that generated 22 shots against the Bearcats.

With Upper Iowa allowing more than two goals per match this season, the Hawks will look to carry that second-half efficiency into Wednesday.

Scouting Upper Iowa

Upper Iowa enters the matchup at 1-8-4 overall and 1-8-2 in conference play. The Peacocks are coming off a narrow 1-0 road loss to No. 11 Drury.

Upper Iowa goalkeeper Noah Nymark-Pedersen made five saves in the match to keep the Peacocks within striking distance. Drury finished with a 14-8 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in attempts on goal, while both teams earned three corner kicks.

Upper Iowa has scored 10 goals through 13 matches while generating 114 shots, an average of approximately 8.8 attempts per contest. The Peacocks have not scored over their last three matches.

Timur Nagy leads Upper Iowa with three goals and three assists. Nahum Ghyslain Wellot Samba has also scored three times while adding one assist, giving the Peacocks two primary threats in the attacking third.

Upper Iowa returned 15 players from last season while adding 27 newcomers, including 12 freshmen. The Peacocks finished the 2025 season 4-11-2 overall and 3-9-2 in GLVC play.

Upper Iowa is led by first-year head coach Jeancy Matumona-Bau, who is in his third season with the program after serving as a volunteer assistant in 2024 and graduate assistant in 2025.

Series History

Since 2022, Quincy holds a 3-1 advantage against Upper Iowa.

The Hawks earned a 3-0 victory over the Peacocks last season at Legends Stadium.

After a scoreless opening half, Cann broke through in the 61st minute off an assist from Carlos Moreno Henao. Nwosu doubled the advantage less than 15 minutes later before Moreno Henao added Quincy's third goal in the 85th minute off an assist from Bringedal.

Offerman made six saves to secure his third shutout of the season.

Upper Iowa finished with an 18-17 advantage in total shots, but Quincy was much more efficient with its opportunities, putting four shots on goal and converting three of them.

Matchup Outlook

Quincy enters Wednesday with momentum after a strong second-half performance against Southwest Baptist and an opportunity to continue climbing the GLVC standings.

The Hawks will look to maintain the defensive form that has limited opponents to just 10 goals while taking advantage of an Upper Iowa team that has gone three consecutive matches without scoring.

Cann enters in strong form after scoring his eighth goal of the season Saturday, while Nwosu and Bringedal give Quincy additional threats capable of creating problems in the attacking third.

Upper Iowa will look to stay organized defensively and rely on Nymark-Pedersen in goal while searching for a breakthrough from Nagy, Wellot Samba and the rest of its attack.

With Quincy currently occupying the final top-four position and only three points separating the Hawks from the conference leaders, every result carries significant postseason implications.

Wednesday also provides Quincy with its final opportunity to play at Legends Stadium during the regular season before finishing with consecutive road matches.

Kickoff between Quincy and Upper Iowa is scheduled for 5:30 PM Wednesday at Legends Stadium.
