Cann Scores Twice as Hawks Battle Upper Iowa to 2-2 Draw

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team battled Upper Iowa to a dramatic 2-2 draw Wednesday afternoon at Legends Stadium in a physical, back-and-forth GLVC matchup.

The result moved Quincy to 6-2-7 overall and 5-1-6 in conference play. The Hawks controlled much of the attacking action, finishing with a commanding 32-11 advantage in shots, a 9-5 edge in shots on goal and a 15-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Quincy came out firing, producing several early chances and forcing three saves over the opening 25 minutes. Despite the Hawks' pressure, Upper Iowa struck first in the 27th minute when Timur Nagy finished a chance set up by Benjamin Wendel to give the Peacocks a 1-0 advantage.

The Hawks went into halftime trailing by one despite holding a 10-4 advantage in shots and earning nine corner kicks during the opening 45 minutes.

Quincy continued to apply pressure after the break and finally found the equalizer in the 55th minute. Leo Cann stepped to the spot following an Upper Iowa foul and converted the penalty kick at the 54:38 mark, leveling the match at 1-1.

The Hawks continued to press for the go-ahead goal, eventually breaking through again late in the match. Cann found the back of the net for a second time at 78:02, giving Quincy its first lead of the afternoon at 2-1.

The brace marked Cann's third multi-goal performance of the season and pushed his season total to 10 goals.

The lead lasted only 10 seconds.

Upper Iowa immediately responded off the restart, with Jannik Schlegel scoring at the 78:12 mark off assists from Rodrigo De La Fuente and Matas Dumalakas to tie the contest back up at 2-2.

The closing stretch remained physical and chaotic. Upper Iowa was reduced to 10 men following a red card in the 86th minute, and the Hawks nearly took advantage moments later. Carter Venvertloh forced a save before hitting the left post at the 86:12 mark, narrowly missing what would have been the game-winning goal.

The two sides combined for 22 fouls, while Upper Iowa was issued multiple yellow cards and the late red card in a physical conference battle.

Cann led the Quincy attack with 10 shots, five on goal and two goals, while Rylan Fischer added seven attempts. Jake Offerman played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded three saves.

The Hawks return to action Sunday, October 18, when they travel to Jefferson City, Missouri, to take on No. 15 Lincoln University, a team that enters the matchup unbeaten. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 PM.
