QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team picked up another point in a crowded GLVC race Wednesday afternoon, battling Maryville University to a 1-1 draw at Legends Stadium.
The result moved Quincy to 5-2-6 overall and 4-1-5 in GLVC play, while Maryville moved to 8-3-2 overall and 6-1-2 in conference action.
With
Jake Offerman serving a red card suspension stemming from Quincy's previous match against Drury,
Max Frericks made the second start of his collegiate career in goal for the Hawks. Frericks played all 90 minutes, allowing one goal while making one save.
Both sides generated opportunities during the opening half, but neither was able to break through. Quincy held a 7-5 advantage in shots and put two attempts on goal before halftime.
Leo Cann forced Maryville goalkeeper Asgrimur Vidisson into saves in both the 20th and 35th minutes as the teams went into the break scoreless.
The score remained locked at zero deep into the second half before
Josh Nwosu caught the Saints off guard in the 78th minute.
Following a Maryville foul roughly 10 yards outside the penalty area, Nwosu wasted no time over the free kick. With the Saints still getting organized, he quickly restarted play and beautifully placed his strike into the back of the net, putting Quincy ahead 1-0.
The goal was Nwosu's fifth of the season.
Maryville responded with pressure over the closing minutes and eventually found the equalizer. Following a Saints corner that Quincy initially worked out of the box, Maryville regained possession and sent the ball back into the attacking area. Jose Vilela collected it around eight yards outside the box and fired a left-footed strike into the lower-left corner past Frericks at the 86:06 mark, tying the match at 1-1.
Neither side found another breakthrough over the final four minutes.
Maryville finished with a narrow 10-9 advantage in shots, while Quincy held a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. The Saints earned seven corner kicks compared to six for the Hawks. Cann led Quincy with three shots and two on goal, while Nwosu finished with two shots and the Hawks' lone goal.
With four matches remaining in the regular season, the Hawks sit sixth in the GLVC standings with 17 points in an extremely tight conference race. Quincy is just one point behind Indianapolis and Missouri S&T, who are tied at 18 points, while Drury sits at 19 and Lincoln and Maryville each hold 20.
