Quincy Returns for a New Season on the Mat

QUINCY, Ill. - Quincy University men's wrestling enters the 2026-27 season with a roster that combines returning experience, proven tournament performers and a large group of newcomers looking to make an impact.

The Hawks have several who've competed at the national level, including regional champion and NCAA qualifier Sabian Russell, while adding depth throughout the lineup.

The Hawks' roster includes athletes from across the country, with wrestlers representing states such as Washington, Arizona, California, Ohio, Alaska and Illinois. That combination of returning wrestlers, transfers, and newcomers gives Quincy a broad foundation heading into the new season.

Returning Core

Sabian Russell is one of the most accomplished returning wrestlers on the Quincy roster. The senior from Yuma, Arizona, put together a 30-10 record during the 2025-26 season, tying for the team lead in wins and win percentage. Russell also recorded a 14-3 mark in dual competition and reached as high as No. 7 in the national rankings at 149 pounds.

He finished the season by winning the NCAA Division II Regional #4 title, becoming the second regional champion in Quincy men's wrestling history, before competing at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships. Russell earned Second Team All-GLVC honors and was named a NWCA Scholar All-American.

Judah Yates, the Moxxee, Washington native, returns for his redshirt senior season. He finished last season with a 19-18 record and finished second in two competitions for the Hawks. Yates gives Quincy another experienced option where consistency and match management will be important throughout the season.

Yates is joined by fellow senior Hunter Vernon, who will be competing at 174 pounds this season. He finished 11-6 in the previous season and placed first in the Luther Hill Open at the start of matchups. This season will be another opportunity for Vernon to start strong from the beginning and add onto his success.

Raymond Fernandez is a returning senior to watch. The California native is listed at 174 pounds and finished his junior season with a 14-13 record. He has shown continued improvement each year and can put his off season work to the test from the start of the new season.

He is joined by Cody Ruiz, another senior who provides depth and familiarity within the team. He recorded seven falls which tied for the team-high and came away with 10 victories.

Mac Chambers and Lucas Clement return as seniors. Chambers is listed at 174 pounds and previously competed at Cloud County Community College. He finished with a 14-14 record and went 9-3 in dual action. Additionally, Chambers placed sixth at NCAA Division II Regional #4, making him a threat for Quincy's competition this year.

Clement is listed at 165 pounds and gives the Hawks an experienced option in the middle weights. With a record of 15-10 in the previous season and 3-0 in dual action, Clement gives the Hawks collegiate skill while adding versatility to the team.

Te'Andre Allen returns as a senior at 133 pounds. The Cleveland, Ohio, native previously competed at Indian Hills Community College and provides experience for the Hawks. His previous overall record of 24-13 and dual action record of 12-6 along his first place finish at the Luther Hill Open establishes him as one of the more consistent and reliable players in a Quincy uniform.

Donnell Packer is a redshirt senior and is listed at 197 pounds. He came away with fourth place at the Greyhound Open and looks to improve his overall record for the upcoming season. Maxim Ryner is a redshirt junior from Macomb, Illinois, and is listed at 197 pounds. He has not seen action since the 24-25 season when he finished 16-16 overall, but will be eager for fresh opportunities.

Zyan Westbrook returns as a sophomore at 133 pounds and tied for the team in falls recording seven his freshman campaign. He'll be another young contributor for the Hawks.

Gabriel Orosco, the junior from Springfield, Illinois, is listed at 174 pounds and earned a fourth-place finish at the Luther Hill Invitational last year while also recording two decision victories. Now that he has two collegiate years of experience, he can look towards this year's competition to add onto his record.

Added Strength for the Hawks

At 285 pounds, Quincy brings Caleb Groff, Matt Hobbs, Aiden Surratt, and freshman Chandler St. George. Groff is a redshirt junior from Oak Grove, Missouri, who went 7-4 in dual competition while earning 29 points for the Hawks. Hobbs is a redshirt junior from Marine, Illinois, who earned two falls during competition last season.

Aiden Surratt returns as a sophomore from Jacksonville, IL, while freshman Chandler St. George joins Quincy from Fairbanks, Alaska.

Anthony King adds to the senior class at 174 pounds, while Konnor Bush is a redshirt sophomore at 157 pounds, and Christopher Firebaugh at 149 pounds also as a sophomore.

The middle weights feature several other returning wrestlers, including Francisco Munguia, Jackson Jones, Isaiah Nichols, Saul Razo and Dalton Schell.

Hawks Coahing Staff

Jimmy Eggemeyer returns as the Director of Wrestling and men's head coach for the 2026-27 season. He enters his fifth season at the helm and will lead a coaching staff that includes assistant coaches Nathan Berta, Gregory Hagan, Callan Ivy, and volunteer assistant coaches Kayden Garrett and James Smith.

Eggemeyer's staff will have the task of guiding a roster with a wide range of experience, from returning seniors and NCAA qualifiers to a large freshman class. The staff's work will include preparing wrestlers for dual competition, developing individual technique and helping athletes compete throughout the tournament season.

Hagan joins the coaching staff after previously assisting at Menlo College. He brings both coaching experience and previous player knowledge after competing at Grand View University. His addition to the staff provides Quincy with a new perspective and additional coaching capabilities.

Ivy returns as an assistant coach after a notable 2025-26 season as a wrestler. He was one of the first two Quincy wrestlers to earn All-GLVC honors alongside Russell. He finished 30-10 and closed out the year with a fourth place finish at NCAA Division II Regional #4. His experience competing at the conference level will be valuable as the Hawks continue to develop their roster.

Berta, Garrett, and Smith round out the coaching staff and will help provide support across the team's weight classes.

With a roster that includes returning national-level experience, several upperclassmen and a large group of freshmen, the coaching staff will be central to helping Quincy establish its lineup and prepare for the 2026-27 season.

The Hawks enter the new season with plenty of experience to build around and a large group of newcomers ready to compete.
