FAYETTE, Iowa – Quincy women's basketball earned its fourth straight victory Thursday night, grinding out a 58–54 defensive win over Upper Iowa at Dorman Memorial Gym. A career night from
Hayven Harden powered the Hawks to another crucial GLVC road win.
Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm early, combining to shoot just 4-for-15 through the first five minutes. Upper Iowa held a slim 5–4 edge midway through the quarter before
Sydney Runsewe sparked the Hawks, knocking down a pair of three-pointers late in the period. Quincy closed the quarter on a 9–6 run to take a 13–11 lead into the second.
Quincy shot 5-of-16 from the field and 2-of-8 from deep in the opening frame, while Upper Iowa turned the ball over four times.
The defensive tone continued in the second, as neither team was able to create separation. The quarter ended even at 11 points apiece, sending the Hawks into halftime with a narrow 24–22 advantage. Upper Iowa committed eight turnovers in the period, helping Quincy maintain the lead despite continued shooting struggles.
Quincy delivered its best stretch of the night early in the third, opening the half on an 11–2 run.
Hayven Harden scored six points during the surge, while
Katey Flynn added a three to push the Hawks' lead to 35–24, their largest of the game.
Upper Iowa responded late in the quarter, but Harden continued to carry the offense, scoring 10 points in the period alone. Quincy led 41–35 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Harden picked up right where she left off, scoring six points in the first four minutes of the fourth. Upper Iowa answered by heating up from long range, trimming the deficit to 49–45 with six minutes remaining.
After the Peacocks hit their third three-pointer of the quarter to make it a one-point game,
Blair Eftink answered with a clutch three of her own. The teams traded baskets down the stretch before Upper Iowa was forced to foul in the final 30 seconds. Quincy sealed the game at the line, knocking down its final four free throws to secure the 58–54 win.
The Hawks finished with their second-lowest scoring output of the season, shooting 40.7 percent from the field and 5-of-21 from three-point range. Quincy controlled the paint, outscoring Upper Iowa 38–24 inside, and held the Peacocks to just 6-of-23 shooting from beyond the arc after Upper Iowa hit 17 threes in the teams' previous meeting.
Quincy held a 39–34 rebounding advantage and committed just 13 turnovers. Upper Iowa attempted only four free throws in the contest.
Harden delivered a standout performance off the bench, pouring in a season-high 20 points on an efficient 10-of-11 shooting. She added nine rebounds and a season-high four blocks to fill the stat sheet. Eftink chipped in nine points and a season-best six rebounds, while Runsewe finished with six points on two made triples.
The Hawks return home next Thursday to face Truman State inside Pepsi Arena with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 PM. The Bulldogs edged Quincy 70–67 earlier this season in Kirksville.
