Defensive Pressure Slows Hawks in Loss to Truman State

QUINCY, Ill. – Quincy saw its four-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday night as Truman State's defensive pressure set the tone early, holding the Hawks to their second-lowest scoring output of the season in a 79–51 setback inside Pepsi Arena.

Quincy came out with early energy as Blair Eftink scored the Hawks' first five points in the opening 45 seconds, but Truman State quickly seized control. The Bulldogs rattled off a 24–1 run over the next six and a half minutes, shooting 8-of-9 from the field while forcing five Quincy turnovers during that stretch.

Eftink knocked down her second triple of the quarter in the final minute, but the Hawks trailed 27–10 after one. Truman State shot 9-of-12 from the field in the opening frame while Quincy went just 3-of-12, committing seven turnovers and getting outrebounded 10–3.

The pace slowed in the opening five minutes of the second quarter, but Quincy was unable to significantly cut into the deficit, trailing 33–16 at the under-five media timeout.

The Hawks closed the half on a strong note, shooting 4-of-5 from the field over the final stretch, including Eftink's third three-pointer of the game. Despite Truman State shooting just 5-of-18 in the quarter, Quincy managed to outscore the Bulldogs by only two, heading into halftime trailing 41–26.

Truman State reasserted control coming out of the break as its defensive pressure continued to disrupt Quincy's offensive rhythm. The Bulldogs pushed the lead to 52–32 midway through the quarter and carried a 60–34 advantage into the final period after a tough turnaround jumper at the buzzer.

Truman State outscored Quincy 19–10 in the quarter, shooting 46.7 percent from the field and 4-of-5 from three-point range.

The Hawks were unable to mount a late run as Truman State maintained control throughout the fourth quarter. Hayven Harden converted a layup in the final seconds to set the final score at 79–51.

Quincy shot 39.6 percent from the field, marking just the third time this season the Hawks finished below 40 percent shooting. The Hawks went 6-of-21 from three-point range and 3-of-10 at the free-throw line. Truman State shot 47.5 percent overall and held a 38–30 rebounding advantage.

Turnovers proved costly for Quincy, as Truman State converted 17 Hawks turnovers into 27 points. The Bulldogs also received a strong bench performance, scoring 27 points off the bench.

Eftink led Quincy with a season-high 16 points, knocking down a season-best four three-pointers while adding six rebounds. Katey Flynn recorded her first double-double in a Quincy uniform with 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting and a game-high 10 rebounds. Harden continued her efficient play with 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting while adding three blocks on the defensive end.

Truman State had four players score in double figures and was led by freshman guard Morgan Miller, who scored 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting.

The Hawks return to action on Saturday, January 24, when they travel to Liberty, Missouri, to take on William Jewell at 1:00 PM inside Mabee Fieldhouse.
