QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team dropped its second straight game on Monday night, falling 82–76 to the University of Indianapolis inside Pepsi Arena. Cold shooting from beyond the arc proved costly for the Hawks, as UIndy's balanced offense and late free-throw shooting held off a late QU surge.
The opening five minutes were evenly played, with the Hawks holding a slim 10–8 edge as both teams struggled to find rhythm.
That changed over the next stretch, as the Greyhounds caught fire offensively. UIndy went on a 17–8 run, shooting 7-for-10 during that span to take a 25–18 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining.
Indianapolis pushed the lead to double digits around the seven-minute mark, but Quincy responded quickly. Buckets from freshman
Preston Brewer and
Owen Duff sparked a 5–0 run that pulled the Hawks back within striking distance.
The final five minutes were played nearly even, with both teams trading baskets as the Greyhounds maintained their advantage. A layup at the buzzer sent UIndy into the locker room with a 42–37 lead.
While both teams shot around 45 percent in the opening half, the difference came from three-point range. The Greyhounds knocked down five triples, while Quincy went just 2-for-12. The Hawks controlled the glass, however, holding a 23–13 rebounding edge, including eight offensive boards.
Indianapolis opened the second half efficiently, extending its lead to 54–46 after shooting 5-for-7 over the first five minutes. Quincy stayed close at the free-throw line, going a perfect 5-for-5 during that stretch.
The Hawks then made their move. A three from
Ethan Bolton and a three-point play from
Tiernan Stynes highlighted an 8–0 run in just over a minute, tying the game at 54.
UIndy quickly answered with a 10–2 burst of its own to reclaim an eight-point lead with 7:30 remaining.
With Quincy trailing late,
Camren Kincaid took over. The senior poured in 10 points over a four-minute stretch to cut the deficit to just three with under two minutes to play. However, the Greyhounds stayed composed, making timely baskets and going 7-for-8 at the free-throw line in the final minute to seal the 82–76 victory.
Quincy actually shot slightly better from the field, finishing at 46.7 percent compared to UIndy's 45 percent, but the difference came from beyond the arc. The Greyhounds hit 10 three-pointers, while the Hawks went just 3-for-21.
Both teams spent plenty of time at the line, with Indianapolis going 18-for-26 and Quincy finishing 17-for-23.
The Hawks dominated the glass 44–29 and held a 13–7 edge in offensive rebounds, but only turned that into four more second-chance points. Turnovers also hurt QU, as 15 miscues led to 19 Greyhound points.
Kincaid led Quincy for the eighth time this season, finishing with 25 points on 9-for-13 shooting, along with six rebounds and four assists. Bolton and Stynes added 12 and 10 points, respectively, though the duo combined to shoot 6-for-19 from the floor. Brewer provided a spark off the bench, recording a season-high scoring effort while adding four rebounds and a block.
For Indianapolis, Carmelo Harris led all scorers with 28 points, knocking down four threes and going 10-for-12 at the free-throw line as the Greyhounds placed four players in double figures.
The Hawks return to GLVC action on Thursday, January 15, when they host nationally ranked Upper Iowa. The Peacocks edged Quincy 96–92 in overtime earlier this season after erasing a 16-point second-half deficit in Pepsi Arena. Tipoff is set for 7:00 PM following the women's game.
