Hawks Down WJC on the Road

LIBERTY, Mo. - The Quincy University men's lacrosse team got back on the right track on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 8) with a 9-6 nonconference victory over the Cardinals of William Jewell to move to 3-3 on the young season.

Caidyn Prediger led the way for QU, notching four points on a score and three dishes while Eli Cowan added a pair of scores to go along with an assist, six groundballs and a caused turnover.

WJC got the scoring started in a quiet first quarter, netting the opening goal at the 11:58 mark. A Cowan score off a feed from Prediger at the 7:20 mark of the frame formulated the Hawks response to even the tally, before a Jewell goal in the closing minute and change of the frame gave the Cardinals a 2-1 edge after one.

Following a WJC score at the 9:00 mark of the second quarter, a Prediger goal less than a minute later, assisted by Cowan, proved to be the final tally in the scoring column for either side the rest of the half as the Cardinals held a 3-2 advantage at the break.

QU started getting things going in the second half, opening with an unassisted Jameson Essen goal just over a minute into the third to even the tally as the Hawks outscored Jewell 3-2 in the quarter thanks to back-to-back goals from Essen and Mason Luoma to knot the score at 5-5 with 15 minutes to play.

It was Luoma finding the back of the net, once again to open the fourth with a 6-5 advantage. Following a Cardinals goal at the 11:52 mark of the frame, it was all Hawks from there, as QU held WJC scoreless the rest of the way while getting goals from Cowan, Haakon Steen and Colin Usher to finish with a 4-1 advantage in the quarter and close the book on a 9-6 winner.

Austin Vetter recorded his third 20+ save contest of the season, turning away 22 Cardinals shots in the game while allowing a season-best 6 goals on the way to collecting the victory.
