Hawks Reverse Sweep S&T on the Road

Box Score ROLLA, Mo. - The Quincy University men's volleyball team took a quick break from its MIVA schedule for a Thursday night (Mar. 13) meeting with the Miners of Missouri S&T, dropping the first two sets before storming back to reverse sweep S&T (24-26, 20-25, 25-22, 25-19, 15-10).

Aleksandar Sosa had a phenomenal match, notching 26 kills with a pair of aces and a new career-high six blocks for 31 total points. In addition, Relja Milosavljevic added a new career best 13 blocks, ranking fourth all-time in the program's record book for blocks in a single match.

Set One

Barnabas Fenyvesi got the Hawks on the board first with a kill as neither side was able to open an advantage larger than two points for much of the opening stages of the set until a five-point QU run at the 11-12 mark gave Quincy some breathing room at 16-12.

The Miners quickly worked back to within a point at 19-18, before using a three-point run moments later to regain the advantage at 21-20. Kills from Sosa, Ljubisa Novakovic and Tomas Badan, along with a S&T error evened the tally at 24-24 before Missouri S&T took the final two points for a 26-24 victory in the first set.

Set Two

The Hawks opened the second set in dominant fashion, taking a 6-0 advantage to begin the frame. S&T played the catch up game for much of the set as Quincy was able to keep the Miners at bay until the 18-15 mark, where Missouri S&T put together the deciding swing of the set.

Seven straight points went in favor of the home team to erase the deficit and find QU trailing 18-23 late, until a pair of Miners points shortly after ended a 20-25 defeat for the Hawks in the second set.

Set Three

Neither side was able to break through early in the set, as just two points proved to be the largest lead through the first 25 points to a 13-12 Miners advantage, where Missouri S&T put together a run of four points to press ahead 17-12.

The Hawks responded with a five-point swing to deadlock the score at 17-17, using a run of four shortly after to move in front 22-20 late in the set. Following an S&T timeout, a pair of Miners errors and Sosa kill gave QU a 25-22 victory in the third set.

Set Four

S&T jumped out to an early 4-1 edge, prompting the Hawks to tak four of the next five to even the tally at 5-5. Shortly after, QU swings of four, two and four points put the Hawks in fine shape ahead 16-9.

It was smooth sailing the rest of the set, as the Quincy coasted off its large advantage to a comfortable 25-19 winner to force a fifth set.

Set Five

An even 3-3 split of the first six points gave way to back-to-back kills from Sosa to put QU ahead 5-3. Not much had changed by the changing of sides, as Quincy led 8-6.

The Miners were able press back to a draw at 10-10, before the Hawks slammed the door, taking the final five points of the set to to take the final frame 15-10, and complete the reverse sweep victory.
