Box Score ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Hawks faced a tough MIVA opponent in the No. 13 Flyers of Lewis on Friday evening (Feb. 21), giving LU all it could handle before ultimately coming up just short in five sets (19-25, 25-15, 25-23, 23-25, 13-15).
Aleksandar Sosa had a dominant match, posting a new career-high 29 kills on a .339 hitting percentage, proving to be the driving force of the Hawks' offense while also adding three aces, three blocks and a career-high nine digs.
Set One
Four two-point Lewis runs put the Flyers ahead 8-3 in the early going, but the Hawks were able to maneuver back within striking distance shortly after. Six of the next nine points went in favor of Quincy, closing the gap to 9-11 on a
Relja Milosavljevic kill before a pair of Sosa kills moments later trimmed the deficit to 11-12.
LU took four of the next five points to build a four-point advantage, holding the Hawks at bay until a four-point run at the 18-20 mark gave the Flyers the room they need to secure the first set 25-19.
Set Two
After surrendering three of the first five points, QU never trailed again for the remainder of the set, using a Sosa kill and Lewis error to regain the edge before ripping off a five-point run soon after to double up LU to a 10-5 score.
The Flyers responded with a three-point swing to narrow the deficit to two points, prompting Quincy to take six of the next nine points to replenish the advantage to 16-11.
Following a pair of LU points, the Hawks took seven of the next nine points, including a six-point run to press ahead 24-14. A point later,
Tomas Badan delivered the set-winning kill off a feed from
Armaan Dosanjh to give his side a 25-15 victory.
Set Three
Neither team was able to create any distance in the early going as the sides evenly split the first 16 points to an 8-8 score before a pair of Sosa kills, a termination for
Barnabas Fenyvesi and an LU error pushed QU ahead 12-10.
Later in the set at 15-14, a four-point Quincy swing looked to put the Hawks in fine shape up 19-14 until Lewis responded with four points of it's own to cut the lead back to one.
Two kills and an ace from Sosa along with a
Ljubisa Novakovic kill found the Hawks ahead 23-20, prompting three Flyers' points to deadlock the tally at 23-23 before a pair of QU scores gave the Hawks a 25-23 winner.
Set Four
Quincy jumped out to an early 7-4 edge to open the set, followed by a trio of LU points to even the tally. The Hawks answered back with a three-point run of their own as part of a larger 6-2 over the next eight points to open a 13-9 lead.
The next six points went to Lewis to give the Flyers a 15-13 advantage only for QU to come right back with a run of six points to rebuild the lead right back to four at 19-15.
LU utilized a four-point run to knot the score at 20-20 later in the set, going on to make good on the comeback effort and force a fifth set with a 25-23 win.
Set Five
The sides went point-for-point up to a 5-5 draw where LU took the initiative with three straight scores to move ahead 8-5 at the switching of sides.
The Hawks took three of the next four points to move back within one at 8-9, doing so again at 9-10 and 13-14, but ultimately, it wasn't meant to be as the No. 13 Flyers eked out the 15-13 set and 3-2 match victory.
