LEBANON, Ill. – The Quincy University men's wrestling team faced a challenging slate at the GLVC Championship, battling against two nationally recognized programs in Indianapolis and Drury on Sunday (Feb. 16) at McKendree.
The Hawks opened the tournament against No. 3 seed and nationally ranked No. 23 Indianapolis, falling 37-8. Despite the final score, Quincy put up a fight against one of the nation's top programs. Sabian Russell shined with a dominant technical fall (20-4) at 141 pounds, while Brian Farley earned a hard-fought 6-4 decision at 125 pounds. However, the Greyhounds flexed their depth, securing multiple bonus-point wins to control the dual.
Quincy rebounded with a highly competitive match against No. 5 seed Drury, which is receiving votes in the latest national poll. The Hawks came up just short in a 22-18 battle, showing their ability to go toe-to-toe with a strong conference opponent. Russell stayed perfect on the day with a 5-0 decision at 141 pounds, while Hunter Vernon added a clutch 4-2 decision at 157 pounds. Maxim Ryner's win via injury default at 197 pounds and Isaac Bourge's forfeit victory at 133 helped Quincy push the match to the wire, but Drury managed to pull out the victory with a win at 285.
Ranked No. 6 in the tournament, the Hawks showed determination and progress against high-caliber competition. Quincy will look to build on these performances as it continues it's playoff journey with a stop in Warrensburg, MO for the NCAA Super Region IV Tourney on Saturday (Mar. 1) starting at 9:00 AM.
