INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Quincy University sophomore
Jackson Jones has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Wrestler of the Week following an impressive runner-up finish at the Kaufman-Brand Bayly UCM Open, competing in the Open Division at 165 pounds. Jones put together one of the most complete performances of the weekend for the Hawks, navigating a deep and talented bracket while stringing together four straight victories to reach the championship bout.
Jones opened the tournament with a decision victory over Grayson Carpenter of Carl Albert in the round of 16 before continuing his strong run with another decision win over UIndy's Logan Farnell in the second round. Farnell entered the tournament ranked eighth nationally in NCAA Division II by the NWCA, making the win one of the most notable of Jones' weekend. He followed that with a decisive quarterfinal win over SIUE's Gage Murphy and then punched his ticket to the finals with a semifinal decision against Tony Stewart of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.
In the championship match, Jones faced Brett Smith of Northern Illinois and battled through a tough opening period before ultimately falling by major decision. Despite the loss, his run through the bracket and collection of high-level wins earned him conference recognition and highlighted his continued progression as one of the top competitors in the region.
With the honor, Jones becomes just the third Hawk in program history to earn GLVC Wrestler of the Week recognition.
Sabian Russell accomplished the feat twice last season, and Jones now adds his name to that short and growing list. The award reflects not only his individual performance on the mat but also Quincy's continued emergence at the conference and regional level.
Jones and the Hawks will return to action on Saturday, December 6, when they travel to face Drury in their first GLVC dual of the season.
