Hawks Battle to 1–1 Draw in Top-of-the-Table GLVC Clash

QUINCY, Ill. – In a matchup loaded with postseason implications between two of the GLVC's top teams, the Quincy University women's soccer team battled to a hard-fought 1–1 draw against Maryville on a chilly Friday evening at Jack Mackenzie Field. Both teams entered the night separated by just one point in the standings, and the result keeps the Hawks firmly in contention for a top-four seed in next week's conference tournament.

Maryville controlled much of the first half, playing almost entirely in its attacking zone. The Saints broke through in the 20th minute after a throw-in led to a quick touch inside the box that found the back of the net for the 1–0 lead. Despite the pressure, Quincy's defense held strong behind freshman goalkeeper Devin Tracy, who made several key saves to keep the game within reach.

The Hawks came out of halftime with energy and quickly turned the match around. Just 19 seconds into the second half, Rebecca Rheinheimer found the equalizer on a beautiful long pass from Alyssa Amaral, who delivered a pinpoint ball from the opposite side of the field to set up the finish. The goal marked Rheinheimer's 10th of the season, tying her for third in the GLVC, and pushed her to 100 career points, combining her time at St. Louis Community College and Quincy. For Amaral, it was her second assist of the season, as the connection between the two upperclassmen brought the Hawks back level early in the half.

Both sides pushed for a late winner, but Quincy's back line stayed disciplined in the closing minutes. Tracy finished with five saves, including a pair of critical stops to secure the draw. Monica Shupe, earning her third start of the season in place of the injured Gracie Vierra, played the full 90 minutes and helped anchor the defense alongside Reese Wingbermuehle and Marina Oberschmid, who logged 89 minutes and provided key stability in the cold conditions. In the midfield, Jessie Newton and Alayna Vela both played 80+ minutes, with Vela going the distance, helping the Hawks maintain control and shape during a tightly contested second half.

Statistically, Maryville held a 16–5 edge in shots and a 2–0 advantage in corner kicks, but Quincy capitalized on its chances. Rheinheimer and Ella Wolfard led the Hawks' attack with consistent pressure throughout, while the defense and midfield core battled evenly with one of the league's top offenses.

The Hawks remain in the top four of the GLVC standings with 29 points and will have the chance to clinch a home tournament match for the first time since 2018 when they host #24 McKendree University on Sunday, November 2nd, at 12:00 PM for Senior Day. The Bearcats (11-1-1 GLVC) sit atop the league and have won five straight. Quincy will honor Alayna Vela, Alyssa Amaral, Olivia Nelson, Reese Wingbermuehle, Reegan Hess, Ella Wolfard, Freja Hansen, and Monica Shupe prior to kickoff.

Maryville (28 points) will travel to Truman State in a matchup that could impact the final GLVC Tournament seedings. The Hawks will look to snap a five-game skid and earn their first win over McKendree since 2021 — a 1–0 result at home — and a win on Sunday would secure a top-four finish and a home postseason match for Quincy.
