Hawks Battle Elements but Fall Late at UMSL

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – In a pivotal matchup between two teams battling near the top of the GLVC standings, the Quincy University women's soccer team fought through a rainy mess of a game but came up just short in a 2–1 loss to Missouri–St. Louis. The Tritons broke a late tie with a penalty kick in the 81st minute to hand the Hawks a tough road defeat.

UMSL struck first in the 20th minute on a through ball that set up the opening goal. Quincy responded with consistent pressure after halftime, earning 10 second-half shots and seven corner kicks. The breakthrough came in the 71st minute when Ella Wolfard found the net for the third straight game, finishing a scramble off a corner from Jessie Newton with an additional touch from Faith Niebrugge. The goal pushed Wolfard past the 50-point mark in her career, and it also marked a new personal best for goals in a single season, surpassing her sophomore total of seven in 2023.

With the score level at 1–1, the Tritons earned a penalty in the 81st minute. Goalkeeper Devin Tracy guessed the right direction, but the attempt slipped under her reach for what proved to be the game-winning tally. Tracy finished with four saves on the day, including key stops that kept the Hawks in contention.

Despite the result, Quincy's back line and midfield showed grit in the poor conditions. Marina Oberschmid anchored the defense, playing the full 90 minutes for the fourth straight match and the eighth time this season, providing stability against a steady UMSL attack. In the midfield, both Jessie Newton and Alayna Vela went the distance, helping Quincy control long stretches of possession while also contributing defensively.

Statistically, Quincy held a narrow edge in corners (10–6) and put six of their 11 shots on target, compared to seven of 13 for UMSL. Newton provided the assist on Wolfard's goal, giving her six assists on the season to lead the team. That total also has her tied for third in the GLVC, underscoring her role as Quincy's top distributor.

The Hawks enter the final weekend of the GLVC regular season tied for third place with a 10-3-2 overall record and a 9-2-1 mark in conference play (28 points). Quincy will return home for a pivotal matchup against Maryville (10-1-4, 8-1-3 GLVC, 27 points) on Friday, October 31st at 5:00 PM. The Saints enter on a four-match winning streak and will look to extend their run against Quincy, who will aim to snap a two-game skid in the series.
