Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University swim team finished its regular season at home with a dual meet against William Jewell College. Despite holding the lead for most of the meet, key wins from the Cardinals in the 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke pushed William Jewell to a 109-96 victory over the Hawks.
The Hawks started off with a new pool record in the 200 medley relay. Bella Sparrow,
Faith Cummings,
Olga Pucarevic, and
Vanja Vrbanec swam a 1:49.10, the fastest the Hawks have swam since renewing the women's swim team in 2022.
The Cardinals took major points in the 1,000 freestyle, but the Hawks were able to take back the upper hand with first, second, and third place in the 200 freestyle. Sparrow took first with a 1:57.56.
Elisa Armentia Moliner was not too far behind with a 2:00.48 time, and freshman
Kaitlynn Malarney was just a second behind at 2:01.51.
Pucrevic swam her fastest 50 freestyle in competition with a 25.23, securing a second place spot among the Cardinals. She then finished first in the 100 butterfly with a 58.17-second swim, securing a pool record in the mean time.
Nancy Olson gained some points for the Hawks in the event with a 1:00.65 swim.
Ariaa Sheth, Sparrow and Vrbanec all finished with program-best times in the 100 freestyle. Sparrow finished first with a 53.83-second swim, good for third-best in program history. Sheth had her best time at 55.95 seconds and Vrbanec finished a hair behind Sheth at 55.96.
The Hawks last grabbed major points in the 100 backstroke, courtesy of
Faith Cummings and
Ellie Benjamin. Cummings swam a 1:03.41 while Benjamin was less than a second behind at 1:04.20.
Bella Sparrow broke two more pool records in the 100 and 200 freestyle on the day.
"This was just a really fast meet, we had incredible energy and came together as a team," said head coach
Bryan Christiansen. "I am so proud of this group of athletes. The score was much closer than it looks on the women's side, we flip one more event and we're there! Outstanding job against a conference opponent who has eluded us the past few years."
