Women's Volleyball Sweeps Day Two at Ray Thrasher Classic

NASHVILLE, TN. - The Hawks played the minimum six sets en route to a pair of victories over Davenport University and Ray Thrasher Classic host, Trevecca Nazarene University on Saturday (Sep. 7) to conclude the teams trip down to Nashville with a perfect 4-0 record. 

Quincy defeated the Panthers of DU 25-12, 25-18, 25-17 in the morning before taking down the Trojans of TNU 25-18, 25-8, 25-19 in the nightcap to complete the third QU sweep of the young season. 

Match One vs Davenport

Set One 

Seven of the first 10 points of the match went in the Hawks favor as kills from Emma Wijnbergen and Samantha Hansen paired with Panther errors and an ace from Susanna Beretti pushed Quincy to the forefront 7-3. 

Later in the set at 14-10, QU used a five-point run to further the advantage to 19-10 and kept its foot on the gas from there, taking six of the final eight points of the set to claim the first in convincing fashion 25-12. 

Set Two 

After falling behind 3-5 early ing the set, a five-point run on kills from Beretti and Erin Matzke along with an ace for Luna Van Baars and DU errors pushed the Hawks ahead 8-5. 

Davenport worked its way back into things at the midway points evening the score at 12-12 before a four-point Quincy run replenished the lead to 16-12. 

The Panthers never drew closer than two points for the remainder of the set as another four-point Hawks run at the 17-15 mark pressed the advantage to 21-15 and gave QU the separation it needed to go on and take the set 25-18. 

Set Three 

Tied at 2-2 to open the third set, Quincy took six of the next nine points to lead it 8-5 and the Hawks never looked back from there. 

Following a DU point, QU took six of the next eight points to open a six-point edge at 14-18. Davenport never crept closer than five points for the remainder of the set as a block from Matzke and Elena Kasavica concluded a 25-17 set and 3-0 match victory.

Match Two vs Trevecca Nazarene

Set One 

TNU opened with an early 6-4 advantage before Quincy got right back into it taking six of the next eight points to open a 10-8 lead. Kills from Wijnbergen, Van Baars, Beretti and Matzke along with an ace for Van Baars propelled the run. 

The Trojans hung around until a five-point QU run at the 15-14 mark pushed the Hawk advantage to six going down the stretch. A three-point Trevecca run to draw within three was met with a four-point Quincy run followed shortly after by a Wijnbergen kill to claim a 25-18 win in the first frame. 

Set Two 

The Hawks got cooking early and never let up in the second set. After taking the first four points of the set, QU went on to claim 10 of the first 12 points and a sizable 10-2 edge in the early going. 

Quincy followed up the hot start with another huge run just a point later, this time for seven-straight points to balloon the lead to 17-3. The Hawks coasted to a 25-8 win in the second set for an opportunity at a third-straight sweep with a victory in the third set. 

Set Three

The beat went on for QU right into the final set as the Hawks built an early 7-2 lead and looked to be making quick work of the third set before TNU worked its way back to within a point later in the set at 11-10. 

The Trojans stayed within striking distance still just a point away at 17-16 later in the set, but five Quincy points coming from the next six serves all but sealed the deal putting the Hawks ahead 22-17. Moments later, QU completed the sweep with a 25-19 victory in the third set.

The Hawks are back in action on Friday (Sep. 13) for another double-header, this time on the home hardwood of Pepsi Arena for the QU Hawk Invitational. Quincy opens with William Jewell at noon before taking on Winona State at 7:30 PM.
