Hawks Triumph Over Miners

QUINCY, Ill. - The Hawks kept the good times rolling on Saturday (Sep. 28), following up a sweep of Maryville on Friday evening with a four-set victory over the Miners of Missouri S&T (22-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-11) to move to 13-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.

Set One

Neither side was able to create much distance from the other until midway through the set where Missouri S&T used a four-point run at the 12-11 mark to open a 15-12 advantage before using a run of three moments later to lead it 18-13.

Quincy narrowed the margin to a couple points on two occasions at 20-18 and 24-22 but weren't able to make the comeback as the Miners claimed the first set 25-22.

Set Two

S&T got off to a fast start opening with a 7-4 lead before a nine-point eruption from the Hawks propelled Quincy to a 13-7 advantage. Kills from Luna Van Baars, Elena Kasavica, Susanna Beretti, Samantha Hansen and back-to-back aces from Van Bars fueled the run.

The Miners were able to trim the deficit to just two points on a pair of occasions at 17-15 and 20-18 but the Hawks stayed strong down the stretch, taking five of six points to close out a 25-19 win in the second set.

Set Three

Five of the first six points of the set went to Quincy until S&T was able to even the tally later in the set at 6-6. QU took seven of the next nine points to open a 13-8 lead and kept the lead for the remainder of the set.

Although the Miners did draw within a point at 21-20 and 22-21, three-straight kills from Beretti concluded the set in favor of QU 25-21.

Set Four

The Hawks took flight from the start of the set, claiming eight of the first 10 points of the frame and continuing to press the issue from that point on, dominating in every facet on their way to building a 15-point advantage before the sets end at the 24-9 mark. A kill from Hansen closed out a 25-11 set and 3-1 match victory for QU.
