FAYETTE, Iowa - The #24 Hawks were able to continue their fine run of form on Friday evening (Oct. 4), surviving a five-set thriller over Upper Iowa, coming away with a reverse sweep of the Peacocks (20-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-13, 15-8) to remain perfect in GLVC play.
Set One
Upper Iowa got things rolling early in the set, taking nine of the first 12 points. QU worked its way back into the mix later in the set with a three-point run to pull within three at 13-10. UIU maintained a firm grip on the lead for the remainder of the set, never allowing Quincy closer than four points as the Peacocks claimed the first set 25-20.
Set Two
UIU got off to another hot start in the second set, this time taking nine of the first 13 points to open a five-point advantage. Quincy fired right back with a six-point run to burst ahead 10-9. Kills from
Zeynep Cetin,
Susanna Beretti and
Emma Wijnbergen along with blocks from Cetin and
Elena Kasavica fueled the QU run.
Neither side was able to build much of a lead for the remainder of the set as the lead changed back and forth until the Hawks looked to be signaling some intent late in the set taking a 22-20 advantage. UIU took five of the final six points to the steal the set 25-23.
Set Three
After a 4-4 start to the set, Quincy took eight of the next 10 points to move ahead 11-6. Shortly after at 14-9, a five-point Peacocks run evened the tally at 14-14 before QU runs of two and four points propelled the Hawks in front 20-15.
Upper Iowa crept back within three points at 21-18 heading down the stretch, but a four-point QU run closed the book on a 25-18 winner in the third set.
Set Four
The Hawks took off from the start of the set and never looked back, taking six of the first seven points with the help of a five-point run before using another five-point run shortly after to build a 13-3 lead.
It was smooth sailing for Quincy for the remainder of the set as QU maintained a near 10-point advantage for the majority of the set before stretching the edge all the way to 12 in a 25-13 thumping to force a fifth and decisive set.
Set Five
UIU claimed the first two points of the set prompting a four-point QU run to press ahead 4-2. The Hawks traded the next four points before ripping off another run of four to build a comfortable 10-4 lead in a race to 15 points.
The Hawks never allowed Upper Iowa any closer than five points for the remainder of the set as a Peacocks error concluded a 15-8 set and 3-2 match victory for QU for a reverse sweep.
