KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Fresh off a five-set reverse sweep of Upper Iowa last night, the #24 Hawks were given another scare by the Bulldogs of Truman State on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 5), needing all five sets to come away with the victory (25-15, 25-27, 25-19, 22-25, 15-12) to move to 4-0 in GLVC play behind a 28-kill performance from
Emma Wijnbergen.
Set One
After falling behind early in the set, QU used a pair of three-point runs later in the set to move ahead 11-8. TSU drew back within one point with a three-point run of their own shortly after to trail 14-13.
Moments later, a pair of five-point runs from the Hawks sandwiched around a single Bulldog point found Quincy the victor of the first set 25-15 as the Hawks outhit their opposition by .221 in the frame.
Set Two
QU opened the set taking six of seven points on runs of four and two to take an early advantage it would keep for much of the set as the Hawks remained ahead for nearly all of the frame, stretching the edge to as many as five points at 16-11 and 17-12 before TSU roared its way back into the set.
A three-point Bulldogs run at 21-19 gave Truman its first lead of the set at 22-21. TSU forced set-point on three occasions before finally getting over the hump with a kill and QU ball handling error to take the set 27-25.
Set Three
It was the Hawks who got off to another hot start in the third set, taking seven of the first nine points on three and four-point runs before Truman took the next five to even the tally at 7-7.
Each QU advance was subsequently met with an equal response from the Bulldogs until Quincy found the opening it needed with a three-point run to build a 19-15 advantage. TSU was able to narrow the margin to two points but didn't venture any closer as a four-point Hawks run closed out a 25-19 winner.
Set Four
Things stayed tight for the entirety of the frame as the largest lead of the set for either side was just four points in favor of Truman at the 12-8 mark. QU promptly took six of the next eight points to even the score at 14-14.
The Hawks finally clawed their way ahead at 20-19 with back-to-back points and remained firmly in it shortly after at 22-22 until Truman took the final three points of the set to force a fifth frame.
Set Five
QU took the first three points before the Bulldogs burst out for five-straight points to lead 5-3. Moments later, a three-point run from Quincy at the 6-4 mark propelled the Hawks ahead 7-6.
Following a TSU point, another three-point QU run put the Hawks in good shape heading down the stretch 10-7. The sides traded point-for-point to close out the set in favor of Quincy, capped by a Wijnbergen kill to seal a 15-12 set and 3-2 match victory.
