Hawks Vanquished by S&T

ROLLA, Mo. - The Hawks kept the nonconference slate rolling with a match at the Miners of Missouri S&T on Saturday (Mar. 9). Quincy was done in by the Miners in four sets, taking the second but falling in all others despite a 19-kill performance for Raje Alleyne to drop the match (15-25, 25-19, 19-25, 16-25).

Set One

S&T used runs of three and four around a kill from Zackary Zdrojeski to lead early 7-1. Shortly after down 11-4, Quincy took five of eight points to move back within five at 14-9 before the Miners fired off five straight to press the lead to double digits.

The Hawks took five of the next eight points for the second time in the set to narrow the deficit to eight, but it was far too late as Missouri S&T was just points away from a victory it would go on to claim 25-15 to take the first set.

Set Two

After surrendering the first point of the set, Quincy fired off five straight points on a kill and block from Alleyne, an ace for Barnabas Fenyvesi and a couple of errors by S&T. Shortly after, a run of three on kills from Alleyne, Fenyvesi and Relja Milosavljevic made it 9-3.

QU did well in maintaining its early advantage throughout the set, never allowing the Miners to draw closer than four points for the remainder of the frame as the Hawks went on to take a 25-19 win in the second set.

Set Three

The Hawks took advantage of mistakes from their opponent in the early going, getting seven of their 10 points to open the set on errors from the Miners. Down 10-9, S&T took six of the next seven to press a 15-11 lead.

Quincy narrowed the margin to three on a couple of occasions down the stretch, but ultimately couldn't gain enough traction to complete a comeback bid in a 25-19 winner for the Miners.

Set Four

Half of a 10-8 lead for the Hawks to start the fourth came by way of Missouri S&T errors with the other half being supplied by three kills from Alleyne along with kills from Fenyvesi and Milosavljevic.

QU kept it close until a seven-point run at the 15-14 mark put the Hawks in a hole they couldn't climb out of as the Miners were able to cruise to a 25-16 win in the set and 3-1 victory in the match.

Next Up

The Hawks are back in action next Thursday (Mar. 14) at Loyola University Chicago. First serve against the Ramblers is slated for 7:00 PM.
