Ramblers Take Down Hawks in Four Sets

Chicago, Ill. - The Hawks remained on the road for match four of the teams five-game absence from Pepsi Arena against the #12 Ramblers of Loyola University Chicago on Thursday (Mar. 14). Quincy took the third set after falling behind early, but couldn't keep the momentum going in the fourth, falling 3-1 (18-25, 17-25, 25-19, 14-25) to its nationally ranked opponent.

Set One

QU fell behind early as Loyola doubled up the Hawks to a 10-5 score. Quincy responded with five of the next six points to get right back in it down 11-10. A couple errors, blocks for the Logan's, both Brouwer and Gieseke, and kills from Zackary Zdrojeski and Keegan Cary fueled the run.

The Ramblers responded in kind taking five of the next six points to rebuild a five-point advantage, one that they would build on down the stretch and turn into a 25-18 victory in the first set.

Set Two

Quincy never led in the second set but trailed by a single point on eight different occasions. Staying in the set until a three-point LUC run at 11-9 gave Loyola a little breathing room. QU closed the gap back to two at 15-13 on kills from Roman Deryckere and one of his team leading 16 kills from Raje Alleyne

The Ramblers took five of the next six to build a 20-14 advantage and cruise to a 25-17 win in the second set.

Set Three

The Hawks nabbed six of the first nine points getting kills from Alleyne and Zdrojeski along with an ace and two kills for AJ Goedheer. Shortly after at 6-5 Quincy, nine of the next 12 points put QU in fantastic shape up 15-8. Alleyne, Goedheer and Zdrojeski cleaned up the terminations to put the Hawks ahead big.

Loyola crept back to within three points later in the set at 18-15, but the Hawks remained strong down the stretch, not only holding on to the lead but restoring it to six before the set ended in a 25-19 winner for the good guys. Quincy hit .560 in the set, the best team total of any set for either side in the match.

Set Four

The Ramblers led it 8-4 before a kill from Gieseke, ace from Zdrojeski and a pair of errors narrowed the margin to one at 9-8. It was pretty tough sledding from there as LUC claimed the next five points and eight of the next nine to jump out in front 17-9. QU was unable to gain any ground down the stretch in a 25-14 loss to drop the match 3-1.

Next Up

Quincy makes the short trip from Chicago to Romeoville for another MIVA showdown with the #14 Flyers of Lewis University on Saturday (Mar. 16). First serve is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
