ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Hawks rounded out their five-match road trip with a visit to the #14 Flyers of Lewis University on Saturday (Mar. 16). Quincy kept it tight for most of the match, but couldn't overcome the Flyers as LU took the match in three sets (23-25, 18-25, 23-25).
Set One
Quincy took the lead early, jumping out to a 5-2 advantage on kills from
Raje Alleyne,
Aleksandar Sosa and
Roman Deryckere along with blocks from Sosa and
Logan Gieseke. QU did well in maintaining the lead through the midpoint of the set before using a 5-2 run at 12-10 to build its largest lead of the set at 17-12.
LU took seven the next nine points to knot the score at 19-19 heading down the stretch. The Hawks responded with a pair of points on a kill from Sosa and a block for Sosa and Deryckere to regain the late advantage before Lewis took four of the next five to lead 23-22. Quincy equalized on a kill from Alleyne before surrendering the final two points of the set to drop a tight 25-23 first set.
Set Two
Lewis used a 6-1 run at 5-5 to build an 11-6 advantage heading into the middle of the second set. The Flyers continued to press and succeeded in doing so, building up a 19-10 lead as the set drew on, putting QU in a tough spot. Sosa collected a kill coupled with back-to-back aces and an error to try and get his side back into it at 19-14, but it was too little too late as LU went on to claim the second set 25-18.
Set Three
In similar fashion to the first set, Quincy took five of the first seven points to open a 5-2 lead, this time supplied by kills from Alleyne and
Zackary Zdrojeski along with blocks from Gieseke, Alleyne and Zdrojeski plus a service ace for Deryckere. The Flyers evened the tally at 6-6 until a four-point run on back-to-back kills from
AJ Goedheer and another for Gieseke along with an error made it 10-6.
Lewis got back into the set just after the midway point, tying things up at 16-16 before taking four of the next six after that point to jump out in front 20-18. The Hawks were able to draw within one on consecutive terminations for Alleyne at match point, but an LU kill spelled the end for Quincy in a 25-23 set and 3-0 match victory.
