Winter Haven, Fl. - The Quincy University softball team competed in their second day of The Spring Games tournament on Friday (March 8), falling to both St. Cloud State and Wayne State (Nebraska). St. Cloud State took the first game 9-1 and the Wildcats walked off a 3-2 victory.
Game One vs. Huskies
The Hawks had a rocky start after a stellar first day and hit the first batter of the game. The batter later stole home to give the Huskies the advantage after the first half-inning of play.
The Hawks struggled to find their footing, getting on base but leaving runners on without a runner making it around for five innings.
Eileen McGinnis faced an explosive Huskies offense that took advantage of singles and free bases.
KJ Weller took over for her at the end of the fourth inning.
The Hawks forced a double play in the top of the fifth inning to help keep the Huskies at bay and finally put a runner across home plate in the bottom of the inning.
Lindsey Fischer ripped one up the middle giving her a triple on the play.
Isabella Shields popped up a ball to second, bringing Fischer home.
The Huskies offense found more momentum in the sixth inning, scoring five runs on five hits and an error. The game ended after a scoreless inning from the Hawks offense.
Game Two vs. Wildcats
Both squads kept off the scoreboard until the fourth inning when the Hawks took advantage of
Mykah Hurley's walk at the start. Hurley made her way around the bases and came home on a sacrifice fly from
Maddy Findley. The Hawks were looking to repeat with
Allison Kaiser's walk and stolen bases but fell victim to some good defense from the Wildcats.
Kaiser got her shot in the sixth inning as her ground out to second base brought home
Jessie Martin, giving the Hawks a two-run lead late in the game. The Wildcats spoiled the Hawks hopeful win with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh to walk off the win.
Abbey Hultz and
Eileen McGinnis split the game with Hultz taking the first five innings and striking out two, and McGinnis finishing the game in the final two innings.
The Hawks look to get back on track and get back over .500 with games against Northwood and Tiffin on Saturday.
