Big Third Inning Propels Hawks Over Cardinals

LIBERTY, Mo. - The Hawks kicked off GLVC play on the road with game one of a four-game set against the Cardinals of William Jewell on Friday (Mar. 8). Quincy scored all six of its runs in the third inning and used solid pitching performances to ride out a 6-3 winner.

QU loaded the bases in the top of the first but was unable to make anything of it, bringing WJC to the dish to drive in the games first run. A single and stolen base followed by a double put the Cardinals ahead 1-0 after the first.

Neither side entered the scoring column in the second frame before the Hawks batting order erupted for six runs in the top of the third. A one-out walk from Brock Boynton followed by a wild pitch put a runner in scoring position for a RBI single from Dustin Dupont to even the tally at 1-1. A single from Austin Simpson put a pair of men on for a RBI double from JD Ortiz.

A HBP for Joe Huffman filled the pond with ducks for a bases-clearing single from Charlie Allison to make it 5-1. Still not finished, David Broughton drove in Allison two hitters later to press the advantage to 6-1.

WJC got one back in QU starter Griffin Kirn's final inning of work in the fifth, using a pair of hits and a sac fly to draw within four at 6-2. Kyle Manship came on in relief of Kirn in the sixth, facing the minimum in both of his innings of work.

The Cardinals tallied the final score of the contest in the bottom of the eighth, using a walk, stolen base and single up the middle to plate their third run. Roman Harrison came on to close the door in the ninth, laying down the side in order to collect his second save of the season and give the Hawks a 6-3 victory.
