QUINCY, Ill. - In rounds two and three of the Hawk-on-Hawk GLVC battle it was Rockhurst that came away victorious in both seven inning contests. RU held Quincy to a single run in game one of the twin bill for a 5-1 win followed by an offensive explosion in game two to out-slug QU 11-7.
Game One
The first ballgame of the day was by-and-large a pitchers duel as QU starter,
Kobe Essien, held RU off the scoreboard for the first four innings of play while collecting six strikeouts. Essien struck out the side in the fourth to bring Quincy to the dish to plate the first run of the game.
A walk and advancement by wild pitch for
David Broughton put a man in scoring position for a RBI single from
Austin Simpson to put Quincy on the board. RU tacked on a pair in the next half inning, using a HBP, pair of singles and error to push across two runs to take the lead.
Rockhurst added three more in the seventh on two HBP's and two base hits to plate the final runs of the game and take the seven inning contest 5-1.
Game Two
Quincy got on the board in the bottom of the first after a scoreless frame from
Tom Conzemius in the top half, using a pair of walks and error to make it 1-0. Following a double from Simpson, one of his four hits in the contest,
Brock Boynton drove in the final run of the inning to put the Hawks ahead 2-0.
RU used a three-run blast in the second to jump ahead 3-2 before QU answered with three more runs of its own. A walk followed by a double for Broughton put two runners in scoring position for a
Dustin Dupont double, driving in the pair. Dupont advanced to third in the next at-bat on a wild pitch before
Joe Huffman lifted a sac fly to center putting Quincy ahead 5-3.
Conzemius worked around a walk in the third by striking out the side to bring the Hawks to the plate in the third. A two-out single from
Connor Simons put a man on for a two-run shot from
Charlie Allison to press the advantage further to 7-3.
Quincy never scored again from that point on as Rockhurst put up five in the top of the fourth to lead it 8-7 and added three more in the fifth to conclude the scoring and give RU the 11-7 victory.
