Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University softball team continued their home stand on Wednesday (March 20) with a midweek match-up against Columbia College. The Hawks split with the Cougars, taking the first 3-0 and dropping the second 2-0.
Game One
The Hawks outhit the Cougars 7-4 in the first game, translating to a 3-0 win. Quincy's defense was solid throughout but particularly in the first inning when
Abbey Hultz struck out two and the Hawks diffused two hits to keep the Cougars off the board.
The Hawks flew high in the second inning, going three up, three down, and hitting through the Cougars starting pitcher.
Mykah Hurley led off with a walk, and singles from
Kenzie Moss,
Lindsey Fischer, and
Ryleigh Jones gave the Hawks their first two runs of the game. Aileen Walker served a fielder's choice for her first at bat of the season, but the Cougars played smart and threw Fischer out at home.
Allison Kaiser added the final tally of the game on a single up the middle.
The rest of game one moved quickly, neither team going through more than four batters in an inning.
Abbey Hultz threw the full game, striking six out and shutting the Cougars out.
Game Two
Despite a win under their belts, the Hawks were not as successful as they were in the first game. Quincy's best chance came in the first inning off Bella Shields' lead-off single, which led to the bases being loaded.
Kenzie Moss sent a ground ball to short stop, but again the Cougars got the out at home. The Hawks walked out of the inning with two hits but no runs.
The Cougars got on the board in the fourth and fifth innings with a one-run double in the fourth and a fielder's choice.
Eileen McGinnis got the start, going six innings and striking out three.
KJ Weller finished the game, forcing a double play to end the top of the final inning.
