Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University softball team finished their first weekend at home even, dropping its final two contests against Maryville University on Sunday. The Hawks dropped the first game 6-3 and the second 6-0.
Game One
The Hawks had a great start to their St. Patrick's Day;
Allyson Maynard hit one hard over the centerfield fence, giving the Hawks a 3-0 after the first inning. Maryville found its groove in the second, returning two runs to the Hawks three.
Allison Kaiser was busy through the third, fielding a single up the middle and catching two fly balls. She kept the Saints off the board with a diving catch to end the top of the inning.
The Saints responded with some revenge, scoring two runs and forcing the Hawks to use their bullpen.
Eileen McGinnis retired
Abbey Hultz after one out in the fourth inning. The Saints recorded three more runs on a two-run double and ground out RBI.
Hultz was tabbed for the loss, both her and McGinnis each striking one batter out. The Hawks fell victim to flied foul outs, Maryville caught five in foul territory during game one.
Game Two
The second game looked promising for the Hawks with a tired arm to pitch for the Saints. The Hawks, however, struggled to get on base in the first half of the game. Down two,
Ryann Stoudt had a great opportunity to get back to home plate in the third inning but got caught stealing with two runners on. Quincy returned the favor to Maryville in the fifth, ending the inning with a steal putout at second.
The Hawks had some momentum at the bottom of the fifth, getting the bases loaded off a
Ryleigh Jones double to left, a
Lindsey Fischer walk, and a Kaiser single, but the Saints took the force out play at third to send Jones back to the dugout. Another single from the lead-off hitter
Isabella Shields helped the bases fill, but
Jessie Martin flied out to center, ending the inning.
Quincy got in trouble in the top of the seventh inning, giving up four runs on six hits, and struggled to come back for the win in their final inning.
KJ Weller was charged with the loss with
Eileen McGinnis coming in for help after the sixth run. Weller finished the day with two strikeouts.
Allyson Maynard led the Hawks going three for six on the day with a three-run home run.
