Quincy, Ill. - Thirteen runs on nearly 20 hits gave the Quincy University softball team a sweep for their first home contests against Missouri S&T on Saturday (March 16). The Hawks took the first on a walk-off, 3-2, and had a powerhouse offense that finished the second game ten runs to eight.
Game One
Abbey Hultz got the home opener start in the circle, striking out two batters and keeping the Miners off the board for three full innings. The Hawks offense had other plans with
Isabella Shields starting the game with a right field single, brought in from
Avery Funk's fly out to right.
The Hawks were put on the chase in the fourth, the Miners scoring a two-run double to get ahead. Despite some active bats in the fifth inning from Missouri S&T, the Hawks ended the inning with a grounded double play to
Jessie Martin who stepped on third and then shot the ball home to get the lead runner.
The play fired up the Hawks,  who then got their tying run in the bottom of the inning from a Kylie Moss sacrifice fly to center.
Moss had the game winner in the seventh, with a fly ball beyond second base into centerfield, bringing
Allison Kaiser home.
Eileen McGinnis was credited with the win, striking out one and keeping the Miners to just their two runs from the fourth inning.
Game Two
The Hawks offense lit up for the second half of the double header.
Allyson Maynard's single with an error brought
Maddy Findley,
Kenzie Moss, and
Isabella Shields home at the bottom of the first. The Miners responded with four runs in the second inning and another in the third on an error to take the lead 5-3.
Maynard fired again, this time with a double dropping behind short stop, bringing home
Mykah Hurley and Findley.
Allison Kaiser,
Lindsey Fischer, and
Jessie Martin helped take the Hawks from a tied game to being up five runs in just one inning. Fischer tripled down the right field line; Fischer stole home on a passed ball; Martin grounded out, bringing Kaiser back to the dugout smiling.
Kaiser returned the favor from Martin in the fourth inning with a ground out play to the pitcher that brought pinch runner Aileen Walker home.
The Miners made a last ditch effort in the seventh inning, adding three tallies to their side of the scoreboard, but the Hawks locked in and finished the day with two more wins.
KJ Weller dealt the battery for the Hawks in the second game, striking out one batter.
