Hawks Clench Share of GLVC Regular Season Title in Sweep of Lewis

Romeoville, Ill. - The Hawks claimed a share of the 2024 GLVC Regular Season Title in style on Friday evening (Nov. 15) with a sweep of the Flyers of Lewis on the road (25-19, 25-21, 25-19) behind a 20-kill night from Emma Wijnbergen to move to 24-3 on the year and 11-1 in GLVC play.

Set One

LU got off to a winning start, taking eight of the first 12 points of the match good for a four-point advantage. The Hawks responded with three-straight scores as part of a 6-2 run over the next eight points to take a 10-9 edge.

The sides exchanged brief leads until Quincy took the initiative at the 18-18 mark, using a three-point run on two of Susanna Beretti's 18 kills in the match, along with a termination from Wijnbergen to move ahead 21-18.

After a Lewis point, a pair of LU errors, another Wijnbergen kill and an Elena Kasavica ace formed a four-point run that gave the Hawks a 25-19 win in the first set.

Set Two

Quincy led early in the second set, opening up an 8-5 advantage before the Flyers evened the tally shortly after at 9-9. LU continued to apply pressure, using a four-point run to move ahead 13-10, prompting QU runs of two and three points to move back ahead 15-14.

Lewis went on a bit of a hot streak from there, taking seven of the next 10 points and a 21-18 lead late in the set before a Quincy seven-point eruption on a trio of kills from both Beretti and Wijnbergen along with an LU error propelled QU to a 25-21 victory in the second set.

Set Three

The Hawks got off to a fast start in pursuit of the sweep, using a six-point run early to move ahead 9-4 before stretching the advantage to 12-6 shortly after.

QU led by as many as seven points on a few occasions and maintained a healthy advantage throughout the middle of the set to lead 20-13 heading down the stretch.

Six of the next eight points went to the Flyers as Lewis looked to be making a late comeback bid, pulling within three at 22-19 until an error and a pair of Wijnbergen kills slammed the door of opportunity closed, delivering QU a 25-19 set win and sweep of the match.
