Indianapolis, Ind. - The Hawks were on the road for their final match of the regular season, taking on the Greyhounds of University of Indianapolis on Saturday (Nov. 16). After dropping the first set, QU took the second before falling in sets three and four to drop the match three sets to one (22-25, 25-21, 23-25, 21-25).
Set One
Indianapolis got off to a fast start, using a pair of three-point runs as part of a 9-4 opening to the set. Quincy took three of the next four to narrow the deficit to 10-7 on a pair of kills and an ace from Luna Van Bars, but weren't able to close the gap as the momentum shifted back to UIndy.
The Greyhounds held on for the remainder of the set, leading by as many as seven and fighting off a fervent QU comeback bid that saw the Hawks pull back within two points on a kill from
Erin Matzke at 24-22 before dropping the final point of the set in a 25-22 loss.
Set Two
The first six points all went in favor of Quincy as kills and blocks from
Susanna Beretti and Van Baars along with another kill for Matzke and and Indianapolis error put the Hawks in fine shape until the Greyhounds returned the favor with a six-point run of their own, going on to take a 9-7 advantage.
Runs of two, three and four in the ensuing points found the Hawks ahead once again, this time with a 16-12 edge. QU stayed ahead for the remainder of the set, never leading by more than five while never allowing UIndy closer than three on the way to a 25-21 win to even the match at a set apiece.
Set Three
Quincy opened a 4-1 lead to start the set before seven of the next nine points went to the Greyhounds to make it 8-6. Shortly after, at 11-11, a five-point Indianapolis run found the Hawks trailing once again.
Two and three-point runs that were part of a 6-2 stretch from QU pulled the Hawks back within a point at 18-17 until a block from Matzke and Beretti moments later evened the tally at 20-20. The sides traded points to 23-23 where it was the Greyhounds who strung together the final two points for a 25-23 victory.
Set Four
QU opened up another 4-1 advantage in the fourth set, this time maintaining a lead until the 11-11 mark. Later in the set, a six-point Indianapolis run proved to be the difference-maker in this one, lifting the Greyhounds to a 17-12 lead and giving them the separation they needed to go on and take the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
With the loss, the Hawks now have to settle for just a share of the conference Regular Season Title. Sitting at an 11-2 league record, Quincy shares the honor with a Maryville squad it swept in Pepsi Arena back on 9/27.
This is the second occasion during the tenure of Head Coach
Mark Jones that the Hawks have earned a share of the Regular Season Title, doing so as well in 2022.
