Quincy, Ill. – The Quincy University football team brought the University of Fort Lauderdale to the Gem City for their first meeting on Saturday (Sept. 16). Hawks shutdown the Eagles 49-0.
First Quarter:
Morning showers cleared up for the third home football contest of the 2023 season. Post kick-off, the Hawks drove the ball to the Fort Lauderdale 5 yard line, but were unable to convert to a touchdown.
Two drives each for both squads passed before Quincy found the end zone with 2:11 left in the first quarter. Quarterback
Drake Davis found
Marlin Washington, who took a 63-yard jog down the field to the end zone.
Drew Lenzen made the extra point kick to put Quincy up 7-0.
The next Fort Lauderdale drive brought the Hawks a
Brandon Granger sack and a
David Lewis interception and 33 yard return for a Quincy touchdown.
Second Quarter:
The second quarter started hot for the Hawks. Fort Lauderdale started with possession but was quickly turned around when
Anthony Gilpin Jr. returned an Eagle punt attempt for 33 yards to start the second quarter 21-0, including the second made extra point conversion.
Quincy forced the Eagles into another punt formation, starting a home drive at the Quincy 44-yard line. Nine plays later, Davis found a pocket right-side and rushed 3 yards into the end zone.
Another long Quincy drive at the 8
th minute proved successful for the Hawks. Davis sent
Hans Wisnewski a short pass for a short run into the end zone. Lenzen made the point after touchdown kick.
Davis ended his day with one more touchdown pass to
Travis Isaac long for 40 yards, giving the Hawks a 42-0 lead going into halftime.
Third Quarter:
Quincy kicked off in the second half and forced the Eagles into another punt formation that set Quincy up at the Fort Lauderdale 29-yard line.
Ike Wiley rushed up the gauntlet for 9 yards, giving the Hawks its final touchdown of the game.
Shortly after the touchdown, the looming clouds above sent both teams into their locker rooms for a 30-minute lightning delay. The teams squeezed a few minutes of play after the first delay when another bolt of lightning sent the game into another delay. Both coaching staffs agreed to give way to the weather and finish the game in the 3
rd quarter, 49-0.
The Hawks finish their non-conference slate next Saturday (Sept. 23) against Northern Michigan. The game will be at home at 1pm.
