Second Half Surge Finishes Hawks Non-Conference Slate 3-1

Quincy, Ill. – The Quincy University football team finished its non-conference leg of the season on Saturday (Sept. 23) against Northern Michigan University. After a slow start, the Hawks pushed past the Wildcats 45-27.

First Half
The first quarter of the game stayed scoreless for both teams. Each team had two long drives without success. Jackson Connell and Dale Dambek each had sacks in the final Wildcat drive to end the quarter.

Northern Michigan scored on 39-yard field goal attempt at the start of the second quarter. A long toss to Jalen Lawrence in the next drive put Quincy on the scoreboard. Peyton Plunkett forced two fumbles and recovered a third in the next Wildcat possessions, leading to the Hawks' second touchdown. JQ Brown is credited for the second touchdown on a 12-yard rush up the gauntlet. The Wildcats closed the scoreboard gap in the final minute of the half with a touchdown, heading into the locker room only trailing by four (14-10).

Second Half
The Hawks forced the Wildcats into a 17-play drive before Northern Michigan converted on a 20-yard field goal attempt. Quincy responded promptly with a Drake Davis rush up the middle for a 4-yard touchdown run. JQ Brown followed in Davis's footsteps with a 5-yard rush down the neck to put the Hawks up 28-13 after the third quarter.

The Wildcats were swift to find the end zone on the first play of the fourth quarter. High pressure from the Wildcats on the next drive forced the Hawks into a field goal attempt, the first attempt made for the Hawks by kicker Michael Owens. Quincy teased the Wildcats on the next drive, causing the opposition to leave both Marlin Washington and Travis Isaac open at midfield. Davis found Washington on a 69-yard touchdown for a 38-20 lead on the Wildcats. Davis didn't leave Isaac out on the next play and threw him an 8-yard pass into the zone to finish the score line for the Hawks.

Michael Owens made all six attempts for an extra point after touchdown. He went one for two on field goal attempts during play.

The Hawks finish their non-conference slate 3-1, their best 4-game start since 2016. This win against Northern Michigan checked the box in being the first win against a GLIAC opponent. The Hawks will face their first GLVC opponent in the Southwest Baptist Bearcats on September 30th. The Homecoming game will begin at 1 p.m.
