Matas Martin and Nelson Granted All-GLVC Honors

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Great Lakes Valley Conference office announced the women's basketball awards on Wednesday afternoon (March 1st). Two Hawks have been named to the All-GLVC Second Team after helping guide QU to its first GLVC tournament bid in seven years.

Beth Matas Martin led the team in scoring with 16 points per game, which was good for 6th in the league. The senior guard also registered 108 assists for third most in the GLVC. Matas Martin was a sharpshooter for QU as she was the 3rd best three-point shooter in the league making 40.5% of her 173 attempts. She was 62 of 77 from the charity stripe for 80.5% on the season. The Girona, Spain native also played the fourth most minutes per game at just over 35.

"Extremely proud of Beth and her impact on this team," said Coach Kaci Bailey. "She made the 3rd team last year and set out this year with a goal to make 2nd. As I often say, we go as Beth goes! She's a dynamic scorer who also makes others around her better."

This is the second all-conference nod for Matas Martin as she garnered third team all-GLVC in the 2021-22 season.

Joining Matas Martin on the 2nd team, is senior forward Sarah Nelson. The Quincy, Illinois native appeared and started in 26 games for Coach Kaci Bailey. She averaged 12.4 points per game which was second on the team. Nelson shot 138 of 294 from the field for 46.9%, which was good for 15th best in the GLVC.

What an incredible senior year Sarah has had! "From dominating in the paint to stretching the defense by knocking down the 15ft shot consistently," said Coach Bailey on Nelson's year. "She was hard to guard in multiple actions this year. She was the glue that held us together this season!"

Emma Knipe was also recognized by the league as the James R. Spalding sportsmanship.

"Emma is a tremendous leader with a huge heart. She is a true competitor and does it the right way," said Coach Bailey on Knipe's character. "She will knock you down for a rebound then turn around and help you up! She lives our standards on and off the floor!"
