Hawks get Back in Win Column with Non-conference Victory

QUINCY, Ill. - The Hawks were back on the hardwood of Pepsi Arena once again for their third match of their five game home stand, playing host to the Raiders of Milwaukee School of Engineering on Wednesday (Mar. 1) for a 7:00 p.m. contest.

QU out-hit their opponents by over .100 in the match highlighted by a team leading 15 kill effort from Raje Alleyne, good for a 3-1 match victory (25-16, 22-25, 25-23, 25-16).

Set 1

Quincy jumped out to an early lead on a four point run capped off by an Alleyne service ace making it 7-2. The Hawks kept the Raiders in check through the middle of the set. MSOE drew within two at 16-14, but Keegan Carey immediately answered with two kills of his own to pad the lead back to 18-14.

The Raiders responded with two points to cut the lead back to two at 18-16. The rest of the set was all QU, winning the final seven points taking advantage of some timely miscues by their opponents also featuring kills from Carey and Alleyne as well as an ace from Jonas Holzinger to close out the first set victory 25-16.

Set 2

The Hawks were still rolling from their late run in the first set, seizing a 9-5 advantage on a kill from Roman Deryckere. The lead swelled to five on a kill from Carey to make it 12-7. MSOE hung around, closing the gap and taking the lead on a five point run to make it 17-15.

Quincy scored the next three on two errors and another kill from Carey to regain their lead 19-18. The Raiders pulled back out in front 21-19, a lead they wouldn't give up, answering every Hawk score down the stretch with one of their own enroute to a match drawing 25-22 set win.

Set 3

The third set was very tightly contested from wire to wire with neither team holding a lead larger than two throughout the frame. Quincy outhit their opponents by .120 in the set, but couldn't find an opportunity to pull away from MSOE until the crunch time.

Late in this battle of attrition at 23-23, the Raiders balked first, committing two crucial errors, allowing the Hawks to outlast them for a 25-23 win.

Set 4

Looking to stay alive in the match, MSOE pulled out to a 3-2 to start the set. Tied at 7-7, QU pushed ahead with a six point run featuring two kills from Alleyne and two more from Eddie Jakubauskas to make it 13-7.

The run gave the Hawks the spark they needed, growing the lead to nine on their way to a convincing 25-16 victory in the final set, and a 3-1 win in the match.

The Hawks will be back in action again tomorrow, Thursday (Mar. 2) for match four of the home stand, resuming their MIVA conference schedule against Lindenwood University for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
