Hawks Split Home Doubleheader

QUINCY, Ill.- The Quincy University Men's Volleyball had a double header at home on Saturday (Feb. 4) facing off against the Fighting Bees of St. Ambrose University in the 2:00 p.m. matinee contest and the Grand View University Vikings in the 5:00 p.m. evening match. The Hawks swept St. Ambrose in convincing fashion winning in three sets (25-15, 25-14, 25-8). QU fell to GVU in three sets in the second match (22-25, 19-25, 17-25).

Match 1 vs St. Ambrose University

Set 1

Quincy started the game hot going on an 11-0 run lead by Raje Alleyne with 4 kills during that stretch. The Hawks finished the set strong enroute to a 25-15 victory in the first frame.

Set 2

The Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the set off a kill from Zackary Zdrojeski and an ace from Logan Brouwer. St. Ambrose rallied back to draw things at 3-3 but QU sprung to life six of the next seven points to open a comfortable 9-4 advantage.
It was all Hawks from there pushing the lead to as many as 11 in a dominating 25-14 set win.

Set 3

Looking for an early end to the first match of the doubleheader, Quincy piled it on from the start and put this one away early.
QU scored 11 of the first 13 points opening a 11-2 lead in the set. The Hawks kept their foot on the gas all the way to the finish line taking the set 25-8 completing the sweep. Quincy hit a potent .556 in the set and .400 overall in the match.
The Hawks were led by Keegan Carey with 8 kills, Logan Brouwer had 18 assists. The Hawks were great up front collecting a total of 10 blocks against the Fighting Bees.
 
Match 2 vs Grand View University

1st Set

Grand View University was firing on all cylinders to start out this match taking the first five points of the match.
QU worked their way back into the frame knotting things at 9-9 thanks to two Viking errors and a kill from Raje Alleyne. The Hawks battled back and forth through several lead changes finding themselves up one at 22-21 late in the set.

GVU took advantage of four Hawk errors to take back the lead and close out the set 25-22 and take a 1-0 advantage in the match.

Set 2

Quincy started the second frame up 4-2 thanks to two Viking errors and kills from Alleyne and AJ Goedheer. Grand View came back to take the next seven points taking a 9-4 lead.
Down as many as seven, QU pulled back to within four late in the set at 22-18 but it was too little too late as GVU took the set 25-19.

Set 3

Looking to stave off a sweep in the second match of their doubleheader, the Hawks took the lead at 6-5 off an error and a kill from Alleyne.
The Vikings took the next five points to take a 10-6 advantage. Quincy battled but ultimately were not able to close the gap, dropping the final set to Grand View 25-17.

The Hawks are back in action next Friday (Feb. 10) playing host to Loyola University Chicago for a 7:00 p.m. MIVA showdown in Pepsi Arena.
