Box Score QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University sprint football team, fittingly, returned home for homecoming at QU and Week 3 MSFL action at QU Stadium. Quincy hosted Calumet College of St. Joseph, defeating the Crimson Wave 14-13 to send the crowd home happy and move to 2-1 on the season.
QU scored on its first dive of the game. A
Josiah Oliver-Ross return of 15 yards to the QU 30, and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on CCSJ put the Hawks in good field position at their own 45-yard line to start the drive.
Deuce Allaway, in his first start of the season at quarterback, utilized his arm, and even showed off the legs in the first drive. Completions to
Chance Newton and
Camden Pye along with a five-yard run for a first down from Allaway helped the Hawks march to the Calumet College 14. Allaway found Pye, once again, this time for a 14-yard touchdown reception to put QU up early.
Seven plays for 55 yards followed by a successful PAT kick from
Kaden Kaimann made it 7-0 Quincy in the early going.
Neither side put point on the board for the remainder of the first frame, but the Hawks struck early in the second. Following a pass interference call against the Crimson Wave that moved the ball to the CCSJ 39 to end the first quarter, Allaway found a wide open
Exavier Hinton for the 39-yard score. Another good kick from Kaimann made it 14-0 Quincy just over a minute into the second.
Calumet College found the end zone later in the second quarter. Using an interception and 19-yard return to put the Red Wave on the QU 11. A false start penalty moved the ball back to the 16 before an interception for Quincy was negated by a roughing the passer call to move the ball to the five-yard line.
The Hawks nearly got a stop, but CCSJ converted on fourth and goal along with a successful PAT kick to draw within a touchdown at 14-7 heading into the locker room at halftime.
The Crimson Wave found their way into the end zone once again in the third quarter. Following an unsuccessful fake punt attempt from Quincy, Calumet College took over in excellent field position at the QU 14-yard line. CCSJ scored on its first play of the drive to pull within one, but failed to convert on the extra point kick to make it 14-13 at 8:25 mark of the third quarter.
The Hawks defense pitched a shutout for the final 23 minutes of the game to hand Quincy a 14-13 victory and second straight win to improve their record to 2-1 both overall and in conference play.
QU plays the role of host once again next week, welcoming the Eagles of Midway University to QU Stadium for a 1:00 PM MSFL showdown on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 7).
