Hawks Start Season With Scoreless Draw at Maryville

SAINT LOUIS, MO – The Quincy University women's soccer team commenced their 2021 campaign this afternoon (Feb. 26) at Maryville University. Neither the Hawks or Saints could find the back of the net, and the game ended in a 0-0 draw after two overtimes.

Lauren Crane had a shot on goal in the 11th minute for the Hawks, and six minutes later, Morgan Evans had a strike on the net, but both attempts were saved by Saints keeper Katie Nash. Jessica Felix then had a shot on goal in the 34th minute but Nash once again collected the ball in the lower right corner. The Hawks had the first three shots on goal during the game.

Maryville didn't attempt a shot until the 35th minute, but it was blocked. Madison Canoy followed with a strike that hit the crossbar in the 38th minute for the Saints. Maryville's Kennedy Reeser had a shot that was blocked in the 38th minute, but then followed with a strike on goal that was stopped by Hawks goalie Emily Autry who made the save.

The Saints had shots on the net in the 50th and 56th minutes in the second half, but Autry was there to make the stops. Sydney Gorman had the Hawks first shot in the second half in the 64th minute, but it was stopped in the lower left corner. Grace Hilbing followed with a shot on goal 20 minutes later, and it was stopped as well. QU had just two shots on goal in the second half. Autry made another save in the 85th minute and neither team was able to score which forced the contest to overtime.

There were no shots on goal during the two overtimes and ultimately the result ended in a scoreless draw. Hannah Warnecke received a yellow card in the 104th minute during the second overtime. Lexi Porchia, Emily Autry, Sydney Gorman, and Paige Anderson all played 110 minutes during the extended match. Felix also tallied 97 minutes during the contest.

Each team had five shots on goal, but both keepers were there to make every stop. Maryville had 13 corner kicks compared to just two for QU. The Hawks committed 10 fouls while the Saints were called for 16.

This was Hawks' Head Coach Samuel Thomas' first career match on the sidelines for QU. The defensive-minded first game is a fitting storyline for the former All-region goalkeeper and SLIAC All-Decade team member during his career at Principia College.
