QUINCY, Ill - The Quincy University women's basketball team won their first game of the season against McKendree on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 23). The Hawks were 48% from the field in the contest making 24-of-50 shots. Freshman Jazzpher Evans led the way on offense with 18 points.
Starting the first period, McKendree started on a 6-2 run in the first four minutes of play. The Hawks responded later in the quarter as Jazzpher Evans made a layup to give QU a 9-8 lead.
With less than two minutes remaining, the Hawks scored five straight points, extending their lead to 18-13. The Bearcats answered back with a 5-0 run to put the score at 18-17 at the end of the first period.
Both teams fought hard for the lead in the second period. McKendree ended on a 7-1 run to make the score 31-29 at halftime.
QU's Gabrielle Burns scored five out of the ten points by the Hawks in the period.
Quincy's Dami Adeyinka came back hot after the break and made back-to-back three-pointers in a row leading to an early 37-31 lead in the third quarter. The Bearcats responded with a 6-0 run to tie the game, 37-37.
McKendree looked to deliver a blow late in the third after going on a 9-0 run with only three minutes left. The visitors took a 46-39 lead.
The Hawks kept their composure and shortened the lead to 51-48 to end the third quarter.
Emma Knipe and Evans made the first five points in the fourth quarter giving QU the lead, 53-51.
Evans later added six points for the Hawks, helping them extend their lead to 59-53.
QU kept the lead for the rest of the fourth quarter winning their first game of the season, 68-63.
Evans led the Hawks offense down the stretch by scoring ten points out of QU's 20 in the fourth and final period.
