Hawks Outlasted by #11 USI in Defensive Slugfest

EVANSVILLE, In. – Points were hard to come by in Thursday (Jan. 28) night's GLVC matchup between the Quincy University Hawks women's basketball team and the 11th-ranked Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles. Both teams combined for just three made three-pointers all game, but a late burst by USI propelled them over the Hawks, 62-50.

Quincy started off Thursday's game by matching Southern Indiana point-for-point. Five different Hawks scored in the opening ten minutes as the score was 15-14 going into the second quarter.

The offense went stagnant for the Hawks in the second. Two layups by Laney Lantz were the only points scored by QU, but the defense held USI to just six field goals in the quarter. At the break, Quincy trailed 28-19.

Southern Indiana scored the first two baskets to kick off the second half and pushed their lead to thirteen points, 32-19. Quincy showed their fight over the next ten minutes.

Before the end of the third, QU cut the game to six points after two free throws by Emma Knipe and a layup by Maddie Spagnola. USI scored on three more free throws in the final minute to give them a 41-32 lead going to the final quarter.

The Hawks showed a burst of life at the start of the fourth following two layups by Aleksandra Petrovic along with buckets by Jazzpher Evans and Spagnola. This led to an 8-1 run to cut USI's lead to just two points, 42-40.

But just when Quincy got close, the Screaming Eagles distanced themselves. Southern Indiana went on a 12-4 run over three minutes to go back in control, 54-44, with 3:28 left.

This was enough to hold off the Hawks as Quincy failed to score in the final minute and a half. QU fell 62-50.

The Hawks forced ten turnovers and outscored Southern Indiana's bench 21-7 in the game as well.
