Hilbing Strikes Game-Winner To Lift Hawks Over Bearcats

QUINCY, IL - The Quincy University women's soccer team returned to Legends Stadium to take on Southwest Baptist Friday night (Hawktober 11). The Hawks defeated the Bearcats 3-2 behind two goals from Grace Hilbing.

1st Half
The cold weather blowing through the Midwest did not seem to slow down either team in Friday's GLVC matchup. The game turned into an offensive battle, with Quincy holding a 21-16 edge in shots.

The Hawks struck first in the 6th minute. Mary Maloney collected the ball at the top of the box after beautiful passing from Riley Hayes and Lexi Porchia. The junior midfielder turned and beat SBU goalkeeper Ashlyn Gibbs to give QU a 1-0 lead.

Both teams combined for 12 shots in the next 30 minutes but none found the back of the net.

Grace Hilbing came on for the Hawks and made her presence known less than 10 minutes in. After Gibbs saved a shot from Lauren Crane, Hilbing controlled the rebound and nailed one into the bottom right corner. QU led 2-0.

The Bearcats tested QU goalkeeper Emilee Autry in the 40th minute, but the sophomore corralled the shot on goal for her sixth save of the half.

Quincy's two-goal lead stood going into halftime.

2nd Half
The shot parade continued in the second half.

Quincy got off four shots to the Bearcats one in the first 10 minutes, but the visiting team hit pay dirt first.

SBU scored in the 58th minute to cut the Hawks lead to 2-1.

The QU defense tightened up after that, allowing just two shots over the next 20 minutes.

The Hawks were searching for an insurance goal in the 74th minute and Hilbing delivered once again.

The hometown sophomore gathered a long ball from Paige Anderson and let one rip from the top of the box. The shot found its mark and put Quincy up 3-1.

The Bearcats responded by scoring just three minutes later to make the score 3-2.

Quincy locked in for the final 13 minutes and secured the win.
