Hawks Edge Panthers To Complete Weekend Sweep

QUINCY, IL - The Quincy University women's soccer team hosted Drury University Sunday afternoon (Hawktober 13) in their ninth GLVC contest of the season. The Hawks won 2-1, earning their third consecutive win over the Panthers.

1st Half
Sunday's match was fast and physical. The two teams combined for 17 shots and four yellow cards in the opening half.

The Hawks looked to put the pressure on the Drury defense early. QU got off three shots in the first seven minutes but none found their mark.

Maddie Bauer broke the seal in the 8th minute. The junior forward from O'Fallon, Missouri took advantage of a miscue by Panther goalie Kaitlyn Knetzke and scored her fourth goal of the season on an open net. Quincy led 1-0.

Drury responded in the 25th minute. The Panthers first shot of the game hit the cross bar and the QU defense cleared it up the middle of the field. Drury's Keeley Combs ripped a shot sixteen seconds later that hit the post, but Erica Hartley was there to finish the play and tie the game at 1-1.

The Hawks and Panthers continued to battle hard for control of the midfield, as all four yellow cards occurred within a span of 13 minutes.

The visiting team had another scoring chance with 43 seconds remaining in the half, but QU goalie Emilee Autry came away with the save.

The half seemed to be coming to a close, but the Hawks had other ideas.

Jessica Felix got on the end of a free kick and put a shot on frame. Knetzke made a diving stop, but Paige Anderson was right there to put it in the back of the net with 12 seconds to go. The redshirt freshman scored her second goal of the season to put the Hawks up 2-1.

2nd Half
The scoring chances continued early in the second half.

Drury came out of the half and earned a corner kick in the first five minutes. The Panthers got a head on the ball but it sailed high of the goal.

The rest of the game saw stronger defensive play from both sides.

The Hawks put six shots on goal, but Knetzke smothered each one.

The Panther defense was solid in the second half, but the QU defense was better.

Drury only got off two more shots the rest of the way, as one was blocked and Autry corralled the other.

The halftime score stood as Quincy completed the weekend sweep.
