QUINCY, Ill. – After helping lead the Quincy University women's volleyball team to a perfect weekend at the Cameron Invitational, senior middle blocker
Erin Matzke has been named the latest QU Toyota Star of the Week.
Matzke helped power the Hawks to a 4-0 record in Lawton, Oklahoma, as Quincy picked up victories over Minot State, Northeastern State, Cameron and Newman. The Hawks defeated Minot State, Northeastern State and Newman in four sets while sweeping tournament host Cameron in three.
Across the four matches, the Olathe, Kansas native totaled 45 kills, averaging 3.00 kills per set, while hitting .365 for the weekend. She also added four digs and 16 total blocks, averaging 1.06 blocks per set. Matzke accounted for 54 total points during the weekend, averaging 3.60 points per set.
The senior provided a steady presence for a young Quincy squad that entered the weekend looking to bounce back from a 1-3 start to the season. The Hawks responded by rattling off four consecutive victories, with Matzke delivering consistent production throughout the tournament.
Her best all-around performance came in the weekend opener against Minot State. Matzke put down 12 kills while hitting .391 and was a force at the net defensively, recording a career-high eight total blocks on her way to 16.5 points in Quincy's 3-1 victory.
She was even more efficient offensively later in the day against Northeastern State. Matzke finished with a weekend-high 13 kills without committing an attacking error, hitting an impressive .650 as the Hawks secured another four-set win.
Matzke continued her strong play throughout the remainder of the tournament as Quincy swept Cameron before closing the weekend with a 3-1 victory over Newman to complete the perfect 4-0 trip.
Through the first eight matches of the season, Matzke has recorded 71 kills on a .285 hitting percentage with 32 total blocks and 90.5 points. Her strong start has also helped her reach a pair of career milestones, as the senior has now appeared in 100 matches in a Quincy uniform and surpassed 750 career points.
After opening the season 1-3, Quincy has quickly flipped the momentum with four consecutive victories and will carry a 5-3 record into its final tournament of the non-conference season.
Matzke and the Hawks return to action Friday, September 11 and Saturday, September 12 at the Christian Brothers Invitational in Memphis, Tennessee. Quincy will face Miles College at 11:00 AM and LeMoyne-Owen College at 3:00 PM on Friday before taking on Southern New Hampshire University at 9:00 AM and tournament host Christian Brothers University at 3:00 PM on Saturday.
