DETROIT, Mich. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team split its final two matches of the Warrior Invitational on Saturday, rallying past Indiana University of Pennsylvania in four sets before falling to Hillsdale College in straight sets inside the Matthaei Center.
Quincy earned its first victory of the 2026 season with a 17-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-21 win over IUP before closing the weekend with a 25-22, 25-17, 27-25 loss to Hillsdale. The Hawks leave Detroit with a 1-3 record.
Game One: Quincy 3, Indiana (PA) 1
IUP grabbed control early in the opening set, scoring six of the first seven points behind three quick kills. Quincy worked its way back and cut the deficit to as few as two, but the Hawks were never able to put together the extended run needed to completely erase the early deficit. IUP continued to halt each Quincy push and pulled away for a 25-17 victory.
The Crimson Hawks were efficient offensively in the opener, hitting .355 with 15 kills and four errors while adding four service aces. Quincy finished the set with 11 kills and five errors for a .182 hitting percentage.
Quincy flipped the momentum to begin the second set, taking a 4-0 lead while capitalizing on three IUP errors. The advantage disappeared quickly after a four-point response from the Crimson Hawks, setting the tone for a back-and-forth frame.
With the score tied at 13-13, the Hawks finally created some separation with a 5-0 run behind two kills from
Erin Matzke and another from
Olivia Curry. IUP answered once again, using a 6-1 run to erase the Quincy advantage and tie the set at 19-19.
With the Hawks looking to avoid a 2-0 deficit, the freshmen delivered down the stretch. Monika Bíliková and Curry combined for three late kills as Quincy closed out a 25-22 victory to even the match. The Hawks were outstanding offensively, hitting .357 with 14 kills and only four errors while adding five service aces in the set. IUP was held to a .083 hitting percentage.
The Hawks came out firing in the third set, scoring the first seven points as IUP committed four errors. The early advantage was trimmed to 14-11 before the Crimson Hawks completely flipped the set with seven unanswered points, including four consecutive kills, to take an 18-14 lead.
Quincy responded immediately out of a timeout with four kills of its own, including a pair from
Aysem Kocaalp, to even the score at 18-18. Neither team could pull away from there, and the frame was eventually tied at 23. Kocaalp and Matzke then delivered back-to-back kills to give Quincy a 25-23 victory and move the Hawks one set away from their first win of the season. QU hit .214 with 14 kills in the frame while holding IUP to .132.
IUP opened the fourth set with a 6-3 lead, but Quincy answered emphatically with eight consecutive points, sparked by three kills from
Cate McCulloch, to surge ahead 11-6. The advantage eventually grew to seven at 15-8 before the Crimson Hawks mounted another comeback and tied the frame at 16-16.
The two teams continued trading points into the closing stages, but with Quincy holding a 21-20 advantage, the Hawks scored four of the final five points. Kocaalp provided the finishing touch with the match-clinching kill to secure the 25-21 set victory and Quincy's first win of 2026. The Hawks hit .286 with 13 kills and five errors in the final frame while limiting IUP to .103.
Quincy turned in its best offensive performance of the weekend, finishing with 52 kills and a .252 hitting percentage while holding IUP to .164. The Hawks also recorded 62 digs and 7 blocks.
Kocaalp delivered the best performance of her young collegiate career, leading all Quincy attackers with 16 kills on a .333 hitting percentage while adding six digs. Curry posted the first double-digit kill performance of her career with 11 kills, while McCulloch added seven kills and nine digs. Bíliková was highly efficient with six kills and no errors on 11 swings for a .545 hitting percentage.
Macey Rocco directed the offense with 43 assists while adding 15 digs and three service aces, and
Amber Glen chipped in 14 digs.
Game Two: Hillsdale 3, Quincy 0
The opening set against Hillsdale was a back-and-forth battle with neither side able to create much separation. Quincy eventually moved ahead 17-15, but the Chargers responded with the decisive run of the frame, scoring six straight points to turn the two-point deficit into a 21-17 advantage. The Hawks fought to stay within reach but were unable to erase the gap as Hillsdale took the opening set 25-22.
Quincy struggled to find its offensive rhythm, hitting .091 with nine kills and six errors, while Hillsdale recorded 14 kills and hit .195.
Hillsdale carried the momentum into the second set, jumping out to a 6-2 lead before a 5-0 run extended the margin to 11-4. Quincy answered with six consecutive points to cut the deficit to two, with Kocaalp providing a pair of kills during the run.
The Chargers quickly stopped the comeback, scoring seven of the next eight points to push their advantage to 21-13. The deficit proved too much for the Hawks to overcome as Hillsdale closed out the set 25-17. Quincy hit just .053 with nine kills and seven errors, while the Chargers posted 14 kills for the second straight frame and hit .281.
Facing a two-set deficit, Quincy came out aggressively in the third and raced to a 7-2 lead behind a pair of service aces and kills from three different players. The Hawks continued to control the frame and eventually stretched the advantage to 18-11, putting themselves in position to force a fourth set.
Hillsdale refused to go away, steadily cutting into the deficit with several late runs. The Chargers eventually erased the Quincy advantage and spoiled the Hawks' attempt to extend the match, taking the third set 27-25 to complete the sweep. Quincy recorded its best offensive set of the match with 14 kills and a .157 hitting percentage, while Hillsdale finished with 14 kills for the third consecutive frame and hit .188.
Hillsdale held a 42-32 advantage in kills and hit .215 for the match compared to Quincy's .107. Both teams found success at the service line, with Hillsdale recording nine aces and Quincy finishing with seven. The Chargers also held a 61-53 advantage in digs.
Kocaalp, Curry and McCulloch led the Quincy attack with eight kills apiece. Curry was the Hawks' most efficient attacker at .226, while McCulloch added a team-high 11 digs and two service aces. Rocco finished with 24 assists, six digs and two aces, while Glen added nine digs and
Milica Stamenic collected eight.
Quincy closes its opening weekend at 1-3 after playing four matches over two days in Detroit. The Hawks will return to action next weekend at the Cameron Invitational in Lawton, Oklahoma, beginning Friday, September 4th with matches against Minot State University at 10:00 AM and Northeastern State University at 4:00 PM.
