Former Hawk Riley Martin Tosses Scoreless Inning in MLB Debut

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Former Quincy University standout Riley Martin made his Major League debut on Monday afternoon for the Chicago Cubs against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field.

Martin entered the game in the bottom of the eighth inning with the Cubs trailing 6-3 and immediately showed poise on the mound. His first MLB out came against 2025 MLB All-Star Junior Caminero, as Martin battled through a five-pitch at-bat before getting the slugger to pop up in foul territory near third base on a 90 mph slider.

Martin then surrendered an infield single to speedy outfielder Chandler Simpson, one of the fastest runners in Major League Baseball, on a 1-0 slider.

The former Hawk quickly regrouped and got ahead of Rays catcher Nick Fortes 0-2 with a pair of fastballs before inducing a 4-6-3 double play. Gold Glove middle infielders Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson turned the twin killing behind him to end the inning.

Martin finished his debut with a scoreless frame, allowing just one hit while throwing 10 pitches, seven for strikes.
