Quincy Set for GLVC Tournament First Round Clash with Maryville

GREENWOOD, Ind. - The Quincy University men's tennis team is set to make its 13th appearance in the GLVC Tournament, and third straight, as the Hawks travel to Greenwood, Indiana, for a first-round matchup against Maryville University. First serve is scheduled for 9:30 AM CT on May 1st at Center Grove High School.

Quincy enters the postseason with a 13-8 overall record and a 2-2 mark in GLVC play, while the Saints come in at 7-5 overall and 3-1 in conference action. Despite both programs having multiple appearances in the tournament, neither side has ever claimed a GLVC Championship.

The Hawks are still searching for their first conference tournament victory since 2003, holding a 2-17 all-time record in the event. Meanwhile, Maryville is making its fifth appearance, and first since 2023, with a 1-4 all-time record, highlighted by a 2022 upset victory over top-seeded Drury.

Thursday's matchup will mark the first-ever GLVC Tournament meeting between the two programs, though they are no strangers to each other. The teams have met 12 times since 2011, with Maryville holding a slight 7-5 edge, including wins in the last two meetings.

Earlier this season, the Saints defeated Quincy 5-2 in St. Louis on April 4. The Hawks swept all three doubles matches to claim the early point, but Maryville responded by winning five of six singles contests to secure the victory.

Quincy will look to lean on one of its strongest doubles lineups of the season. The No. 1 pairing of Inigo Villacampa and Enrique Doldan has been dominant with a 10-1 record, while the No. 3 duo of Cristobal Tellez and Gerard Abad Puig enters the postseason on a five-match winning streak and remains unbeaten in GLVC play at 4-0.

In singles action, Villacampa headlines the lineup with an impressive 20-3 overall record and a regional ranking of No. 7. Doldan (10-4) and David Eusamio (15-6) have also been key contributors, each posting strong conference records of 3-1. The middle of the lineup, including Tellez and Abad Puig, will be crucial in flipping the result from the regular season meeting.

With momentum in doubles and a balanced singles lineup, the Hawks will aim to reverse their fortunes against the Saints and secure their first GLVC Tournament win in over two decades.
