QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's volleyball team fell in straight sets to Missouri S&T on Friday night inside Pepsi Arena, dropping the match 25-20, 25-21, 25-23.
Missouri S&T opened the match with a balanced offensive attack and jumped out to an early 13-6 advantage in the opening set. Quincy responded behind key kills from
Isaiah Travis, a service ace from
Barnabas Fenyvesi, and a putaway from
Bauer Larson to close the gap to 16-13. The Hawks continued to battle late in the set, but the Miners remained in control and traded points down the stretch to take the opening set 25-20. Missouri S&T was highly efficient offensively in the first set, hitting .484 with 17 kills and just two errors, while Quincy hit .276 with 11 kills and three errors.
The Hawks answered in the second set with early momentum, including kills and a service ace from
Zackary Zdrojeski to help even the score at 10-10. Missouri S&T responded with a 6-1 run to build a 16-11 lead. Quincy continued to fight, with Zdrojeski adding two more kills to keep the Hawks within reach at 21-18. Late kills from Travis and Fenyvesi sparked a final push, but the Miners once again closed out the set with composure, winning 25-21. Quincy hit .182 in the set with 11 kills, while Missouri S&T recorded 16 kills and hit .333.
Quincy delivered its strongest effort in the third set, trading points throughout and tying the frame at 16-16 behind contributions from
Tomas Badan, Fenyvesi, and Zdrojeski. The Hawks stayed within striking distance at 20-20, but Missouri S&T answered late with key finishes to regain control. Quincy pulled within 24-23 before the Miners delivered the final point to complete the sweep. The Hawks hit .257 in the final set with 12 kills and three errors, but Missouri S&T still hit .387 with 15 kills.
Missouri S&T finished with a 48-34 edge in kills and held a slight 5-4 advantage in service aces. The Miners posted a .400 hitting percentage for the match, while the Hawks finished at .237. Missouri S&T also totaled 44 digs and seven total blocks compared to 31 digs and six total blocks for Quincy.
Fenyvesi and Badan led Quincy with eight kills apiece, with Badan hitting an efficient .421. Zdrojeski added seven kills and a service ace, while Larson finished with six kills on a .462 hitting percentage.
Pawel Tuz recorded 28 assists and 10 digs, while
Jade Breckheimer also added 10 digs defensively.
The Hawks look to regroup quickly as they face Missouri S&T in a rematch on Saturday, April 11th, back at Pepsi Arena. First serve is set for 2:00 PM as Quincy honors its seniors.
