QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's volleyball team bounced back in a big way on Saturday afternoon, earning a 3-1 victory over Roosevelt inside Pepsi Arena, defeating the Lakers 25-19, 21-25, 25-14, 27-25. The Hawks improved to 8-9 overall and 5-3 in GLVC play with the win.
The win was fueled by an efficient offensive performance and strong net play, as Quincy hit .317 as a team while out-blocking the Lakers 16-8. The Hawks totaled 55 kills and 49 assists in the match, while Roosevelt finished with 48 kills and a .192 hitting percentage.
The Hawks took control early in the opening set behind a steady offensive attack and multiple kills from
Bauer Larson. Roosevelt kept the set within reach and eventually tied it at 15-15, but Quincy maintained its edge and closed out the frame behind Roosevelt attack errors and a kill from
Isaiah Travis to take the set 25-19.
Quincy remained on the attack in the second set with a much stronger offensive rhythm. The two teams battled through multiple ties early, including a 9-9 deadlock.
Barnabas Fenyvesi and
Zackary Zdrojeski helped pace the attack with key kills, while Larson added another late to give the Hawks separation. Roosevelt answered late in the set, however, taking the frame 25-21 to even the match at 1-1.
The Hawks seized control in the third set, quickly establishing a 10-5 lead. Quincy's offense was dominant throughout the frame, recording eight kills during an early run while capitalizing on Roosevelt errors. The lead grew to 20-10 before Travis delivered two service aces late to seal a commanding 25-14 set win and give Quincy a 2-1 advantage.
Roosevelt answered in the fourth set, jumping out to a 15-7 lead and putting pressure on the Hawks early. Quincy chipped away at the deficit and eventually regained momentum behind strong serving and timely kills. A service ace from Larson gave the Hawks a narrow edge, and Fenyvesi added another to keep Quincy in front late. With the set tightly contested down the stretch, the Hawks remained composed as Fenyvesi delivered the match-clinching kill to secure the 27-25 victory.
Larson led the Hawks offensively with a career-high 15 kills while also setting new career marks with 17.0 points and 10 digs, recording the first double-double of his career. Travis also turned in a career performance, finishing with nine kills, a career-high nine total blocks, and a career-best 18.0 points.
Jade Breckheimer tied his career high with 13 digs, while Fenyvesi added 10 kills and two service aces. Zdrojeski chipped in nine kills, and
Tomas Badan finished with 10 kills while hitting .438.
Pawel Tuz directed the offense with 46 assists, seven digs, and five block assists.
The Hawks will look to carry this momentum into their next matchup as they continue conference play, traveling to face Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri inside Mason-Halpin Field House with first serve scheduled for 6:00 PM on Thursday, April 2nd.
