ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team suffered its first GLVC loss of the season on Friday night, falling to Maryville University in straight sets (25-18, 25-16, 25-17) inside Moloney Arena. The Hawks move to 7-7 overall and 4-1 in conference play, while the Saints remain unbeaten in league action at 5-0.
Both teams came out firing, trading points early as the set was tied 7-7. Maryville used a 6-2 run, fueled by three kills and a service ace, to take a 13-9 advantage. Quincy responded to stay within striking distance at 16-12, but the Saints created separation with a decisive 5-0 run highlighted by back-to-back service aces.
Despite the Hawks' efficient offense, a late error sealed the set for Maryville, 25-18.
Offensively, Quincy was sharp, hitting an impressive .455 with 12 kills and just two errors. However, the Saints were nearly unstoppable, posting a blistering .619 hitting percentage with 15 kills.
Maryville dictated the pace throughout the second set, stringing together multiple small runs while limiting Quincy to single-point responses. The Hawks' best push came late, capitalizing on three consecutive Saints errors to cut into a 20-12 deficit, but Maryville quickly regained control to close out a 25-16 win.
The set marked a significant offensive drop-off for both sides. Quincy hit just .094 with 10 kills and seven errors, while Maryville managed a .222 clip with 10 kills.
The final frame began competitively, with the teams tied at 10-10. The Saints then seized control with a 6-1 run, capitalizing on four Quincy errors to build a 20-14 lead. Maryville finished strong, scoring four of the final five points to secure the sweep with a 25-17 victory.
Maryville remained highly efficient offensively, hitting .524 with 13 kills, while Quincy struggled to find rhythm, finishing at .077 with nine kills and seven errors.
For the match, Maryville's offensive consistency proved to be the difference, as the Saints hit .435 compared to Quincy's .188. The Saints also held advantages in total kills and defensive consistency, while committing just eight attacking errors across the three sets. Quincy remained competitive early, but was unable to match Maryville's efficiency over the course of the match.
Barnabas Fenyvesi led the Hawks with seven kills on a .462 hitting percentage, while
Isaiah Travis turned in a strong all-around performance with five kills, a service ace, and four block assists to lead Quincy with eight total points.
Zackary Zdrojeski added six kills, and
Tomas Badan chipped in five kills on a .333 clip. Running the offense,
Pawel Tuz dished out 24 assists while adding five digs.
Defensively, Quincy totaled 10 team blocks but struggled to slow down a Maryville offense that saw Makai Scott lead all players with 11 kills on .556 hitting. Luke Martinez added nine kills on an impressive .800 clip, helping the Saints maintain control throughout the match.
The Hawks will look for revenge as they return to Moloney Arena to face Maryville on Saturday, March 21st at 2:00 PM.
